the cut area is a no wake zone for boats.

well they were hitting good but with the water from the melt off an the rain i think it might put the whammy on the fishing. ill be back to work in another week so wont be able to give any reports.some nut was out on the ice on main lake all alone the next day where he was the ice was gone he really lucked out guess some guys just don't want to put the winter gear away.

The water is up over 10 feet right now and climbing slowly from the winter drawdown. They won't make a gate change at least until next week to let any water out. Normal is 610 and right now is 620+, I'm not sure how much if any of the road bed is still visable

Where is this "road bed" you folks are talking about?  Is it the one at the mouth of Hunter Run cut?
Title: Re: Foster Joseph Sayers Lake
Post by: WildOutdoorAddict on Mar 14, 2010, 05:20 PM
That's only a part of it. It runs the length of the lake basically. It was old route 220 a long time ago.  You access it from the beach area also when the water is drawn down. Up above the causeway a ways there are parts of it that form an island basically.

its under water now the lake is around winter level but on the rise think this will put the kibosh to the good fishing. we had a good week of the draw down fishing an had a blast i think there may a chance the water will go back down i hope

OK little help fellas.. going to take my son up to the lake tomorrow hopefully not only to fish but to catch. Any tips on where or how would be great. We dont keep our fish it is stricktly the fun of getting out and catching. We can do the minnow thing or throw small jigs.. just some pointers on where would help. Is the causeway at howard a good starting point.. or the beach area... dont know much about the spill way. Again thanks for your help.

The causeway may be ok at this point with the water up some yet.I'm sure the fish are scattered some. You may be better of to go to the cut at the roadbed there. The beach area probably still has to much water to get to the roadbed there. Beware of the mud a this point in most areas with the water going back down. I'm not sure how old your son is, but that mud can eat a persons shoe/boot at times, may wanna bring a spare...lol

the  cuuseway is a good place to start but the bank is pretty steep and a lot of loose rocks.
the spillway is easy to find is instead of turning into the park main entrance keep going about a mile take the first right on to marsh creek rd. go to the stop sign and take a right go 3/4 mile to the hair pin turn park in the parking lot where the cars are.

Digger Don for john t.   Just to let everyone know we are down to the lake level of 620.25 and that is far down as we will be going.  Also it is uncertain at this time how long we will let it that way!  I would like to request a favor for everyone who ventures below the lake to fish the outlet & the gut  First off when you park please park at the top of the road in the designated area and not down the road towards the Sewage Treatment plant.  Also folks I have noticed and picked up several bags of TRASH & GARBAGE already!  The parking lot and outlet and gut are not LANDFILLS we do not have time to follow behind everyone!   Everyone is welcome to enjoy the fishing but please keep those areas cleaned up!  THE FISHING HAS BEEN EXCELENT - Good place to bring the kids.  THANKS GUY & LADIES and I'll be seeing and talking to everyone!   Yours in fishing           DON!

crappie_rod, the fishing has been pretty good for the most part. No big crappie lately but lots of them. If your coming down in 2 weeks the water level should be almost to summer pool level and be able to access most ramps...hopefully anyway. Water should be about 60 degrees by then also if the weather holds out

Digger Don for John t.  - We started to fill the lake back to the summer level last week and at this time we are at 622.60 as summer lever is 630.00.    Once again please keep all fishing areas clean and free from trash.  Also we fixed up the walkway down to the outlet below the dam.  Filled in the ditch by the Sewage Treatment plant to help handicaped people make it down to fish.   Good fishing - Don!

Title: Re: Foster Joseph Sayers Lake

I was  there Fri. night and  yesterday and we launched from the winter launch. There were a bunch of cars and trucks at the lower greens lot. Couldn't tell if there were any trailers on them. Didn't look at the Howard launch. We hammerde the crappies Fri. night and fished till almost dark. Got out Sat. about 9 and fished till 5 pm. Only fished 3 spots. They didn't bite too good on first spot. Went to next spot and hammered them for 2 or 3 hours. The wind picked up pretty good so we moved up to the causeway to get out of the wind cause our anchors wouldn't hold. That move didn't work. Fished there for an hour or so. Wind died down some so we moved to the second spot and they were hiting like crazy again. Fished that spot till 5. Great day no rain to speak of. Rained on the way home on 80.

The group which post on here, they know who they are, we caught several crappies this winter well over 9" some days we came close to catching a limit, but you went through a lot a fish to get there.

Only had 7 keepers in 9 1/2 hours of fishing. They were 9 1/2 to 11 in. The average is the usual 8 1/2 to 8 3/4 with some just a hair over 9. It was just great to caught a bunch of fish no matter the size with my dad and brother.

A buddy and I went up Friday night to the spillway around dark and fished til 1:30a.m. We each caught a limit of crappie 8-10 inchers. We caught close to 200 though and half were under 8inches  as usual. But hey, the one we kept taste as good as the bigger 11-12 inch ones, just takes more fillets to fill me up. Caught a couple catfish also, but no bonus walleye.

I spent several hours yesterday on the lake trying to get my girls to catch some fish and we didn't get a thing. I don't have much experience on this lake and was hoping that someone would be able to help us out. Are there any certain spots we should try? What time of day is best for crappie and what bait? The good spots that I have been told about are the bridge pillars and the old rt 220 road bed.
Title: Re: Foster Joseph Sayers Lake

You can find Crappie almost anywhere in the lake. I haven't been there on the lake in a few weeks now, but I would assume the water temp is around 58-62 anyway or close. So, I would say as long as the weather is stable I'd fish toward shore. If you have a boat and fish finder they are easy to find. Fathead minnows and jigs are the main bait for crappie. Keep in mind that crappies feed up..so keep the bait just above them. When the bite is on somedays it doesn't hardly matter what color of jig you use..other days they can be snoopy..just like almost all fish...good luck
Title: Re: Foster Joseph Sayers Lake
Post by: timmyturtle on May 16, 2010, 08:12 PM
Thank you. Is there a certain time of day that is better than others? We were there during the afternoon and the most we got was a good tan.

Is it generally better to anchor somewhere or just troll the shore line and jig for them? I know during the day it is pretty windy on the lake and is really hard to stay anchored anywhere.
Title: Re: Foster Joseph Sayers Lake
Post by: WildOutdoorAddict on May 16, 2010, 09:30 PM
Generally morning and evening are good bets for a decent bite, but it can turn on at any time of day, and shut off too ::) you can even get a good night bite this time of year also and throughout summer. I usually don't anchor I use the wind and drift with it from school to school until I find some keepers anyway. Fish minnows and worms during the day on or near the bottom for perch also and maybe get the kids catching them also, they don't move around at night much they have poor night vision so they lay on bottom with their fins touching, but crappies have very good night vision. Good Luck!

Has anybody been having any recent luck at Sayers for anything? I haven't had a chance to go back yet but would like to try drifting for some catfish to and see if I can find anything there.

Made it to the lake today for about 2 hours to take the kids tubing for a little. We didn't get any fishing in today. We did count at least 20 dead smaller crappie's floating in the lake. I'm not too sure what is killing them but it was a bit disturbing. I would assume it is probably people hooking them and cutting the hook as opposed to something environmental, but I really don't know.

My wife and I went up Sunday evening  the 30th. and fished til about 11pm. We caught a million 8 1/2 inchers and only a few keepers but threw them back. She caught a real nice smallmouth close to 4 lbs anyway.

I hit the water about 5am saturday, it was nice and calm, no one out yet. Only caught about 10 or so bass, mix of small and large mouth. I did manage to get 3 keepers between 16 and 20 though. I had to call it a day around 9 am but all in all not too bad for a season opener.

Was out today from 5:15 am. to 12:30pm, between 2 of us we only managed to get 5 bass; 3 large, 1 small, 1 rock all between 6 and 12 ''. Horribly slow day, we didn't see anyone catch a thing, the guy i was with was out yesterday for a few hours and only got a blue gill. So for 10 hours of fishing for him he managed to get 1 blue gill.Even the carp weren't jumping around like they always do. I think we might be heading to lake hammond or rose valley if anyone has any reports for those.

Hi Builder, how are you? I haven't been out in the boat yet this year there. It's been absolutely terrible for  fishing weather this month! We've had well over 8 inches of rain so far and it's coming down again right now! We've been to the spillway a couple times and at the cut, but the bite was slow. Water is at summer pool level now and probably gonna go up after this storm. The way it seems they may as well just let it there now since May is almost here. I'm taking the boat to Raystown for Striper this weekend nut it's suppose to be nice finally so hopefully someone can report on the crappie bite here.

Talk to one of Rich's girls on the phone and she said that they are biting good. I am coming down tomm. no boat. Weather doesn't look too good for boating. Probably be around the causeway?

Fished the causeway today from 9 till 2. Not much going on on the west side. It is like walking on a brush pile from all the junk pushed there from the heavy rain. Went to the east side and hammered the crappies. Rained on and off whole time was there. Not one legal fish as usual. Fun any way.

You weren't lyin bout that!!! trolled with minnows while throwing a senko worm into the newly submerged cover, caught a bunch of non legal crappie and bluegill.. No bass, but I almost flipped when, after attempting to entice a bass the entire afternoon, a boat pulled about 50 feet away, and after just a few casts, they were hootin and hollerin when a kid pulled up a nice two pounder.

Going to try it again today..

I'd suggest you try the main lake rather than hunter's run, if possible. I've been fishing near the bridge and bald eagle boat launch, and had alot of luck, my best catches so far have included an 11 inch crappie and 17 inch bass.. Tried hunter's run the other day, only caught one smallmouth and one rock bass in 3 hours.

We also fished Sayers for 5 hours yesterday evening. The die off happens every year about this time. Some say it's due to the rising water temp. I suppose some are due to being hooked deep and released. We caught tons of Crappies but not any that were legal...8 1/2....8 3/4....8 7/8. It's a good time to get the kids fishing !!! During one stretch I caught Crappies on 5 consecutive casts. The water was clear and 82 degrees on the mountain side...85-86 and stained on the marina side. The males were "blacker than black"...I don't think I've ever seen them this dark.

It could be from all the high water from flooding this year...maybe they drowned   ::) ::) ;D

fished the east roadbed yesterday, after a brief rain delay.. fishing was decent, caught two nice size bullhead cats right off the bat, then one smallmouth. For the next few hours, caught a bunch of dink crappie, and later on, hooked into a HUGE largemouth which jumped out of the water several times, and threw the hook on the last time. I thought I was gonna have a heart attack lol.. but still a decent day..

btw, I remember seeing a map last year, that showed the lake, and all the various artificial fish structures around, it was free, and I can't seem to find it now. Anyone have it, or know where I can find one??

Icemanclem and I went this morning for crappie and we did OK, with lots of shorts as usual.. we brought 10 keepers home.. still quite a few die offs floating around though.
Fishingood, you can go to the PFBC website and print a map there..that's the only free one I know of.

Iceman clem and i fished here today bite is very slow the road bed at the hunter run is all fishable and the road bed at the beach area will be early next week, the draw down only last a few weeks do the the lack of snow. once the fishing structure is done then they will fill it back up. water level is at 618.00

when the lake is drawn down can you still use the winter lauch to get a boat in or is it too low.i never seen that launch during the draw down.

Builder,
This is the only launch you can use when the lake is drawn down.  It is not too bad of a launch, the only bad part is how muddy the boat gets from people's feet d/t no dock, but gives you access to the lake.

[Fished off the end of the road bed this morning, water still very dirty.  Started using two rods, went through three dozen fatheads, on the bottom and under a float in a couple of hours.  No legal crappies, although I lost a good one at the bank, still had Wilds ice jig from last years ice still  in his lip.  The best catch was finding two anchors that were broke off at the road bed./quote]

We met at the tourney on Walker last winter, I was partnered with ISH.   We'll meet again on the roadbed, I'll be the one with my right arm that is 6 inches longer than my left from carrying the two anchors back to my car.
May be there on Monday in my boat.
