Title: Eating Yellow perch
Post by: The Rusty Crab on Aug 18, 2010, 09:11 AM
So I was informed that out in New York on Lake Ontario they eat yellow perch.  Fillet and battered then deep fried,  suppose to taste like a potato chip???  I didn't believe them until dinner that evening and seeing on the specials Northern Yellow Perch: broiled or Fried 11.50.  Shocked has anyone ever ate these aggrevating bait takers

Very tasty, if you can find them without worms. Still anoying little bait stealers though.

Yellow perch are very good to eat.  I like them rolled in bread crumbs and fried up in a skillet with butter.  I have never caught a wormy yellow perch in NY...only a tiny worm here and there (plus some with worms around their eyes, but not usually much in the meat).  Many of the ones I have caught up here in Maine are quite wormy though...probably wouldn't hurt the taste, but just unappetizing.  Edible though, I'm sure...if cooked well.

Yellow perch are wonderful table fare. We fillet and either batter and fry or boil and serve chilled with cocktail sauce as a poor mans shrimp. Clean, firm white flesh fish. Any worms found will not hurt the eater. Only unappetising to the eye. I will usually discard fillets with worms/grubs. Only found a few in some fish caught in warm waters in the summer. Very few if any found in the flesh of cold water fish caught while ice fishing.

put the fillets in salted water overnight in the fridge, and the worms will get out of the meat. no worms here, just grubs in some sunfish.

I asked to see a guy's catch one day (not far from home) and he had a near the brim 5 gal pail-full of them 'Tiger Trout'! Said 'e got a bunch of Whites too. Asked to see those and he said he threw them all back!?!?!  :o He was in a canoe, fishing solo... He was departing, I was embarking.

The first Crappie I ever saw came from there. Just a few moons (years and years) back...

Awesome result of a post guys!!! Always wanted to go to Maine to ice fish, we talk about it all the time when on the ice here.
I can believe 14 hours, my sister in law lived in northern Maine. Drove to her house once, was just over 12 hours.
I'm between Albany and Platsburg. I'm over two hours from Pulaski.
Still would be a great time, and worth any drive.

Total driving time was around 12 hours but stopping to eat, we did take a quick spin over to the beach to see if it was worth trying to hit for stripers, then waited outside cabellas for 1/2 hour.

Nice. Welcome Team NY. Take all the perch you want. A few years ago i put my nephew onto a pile of them. this pic represents probably about a quarter of all we caught in a few hourse before the SuperBowl. I filleted these up and gave them to a friend from wisconsin. He was stoked. Nephew was as well.

i can not belive that you guys dont eat perch. here in NY people will give there left nut for fish like that. i spend a lot of my ice fishing season chaseing those and monster blue gills. i would love to get up there this year. we will be working on a trip for sure. let us know if any of you guys decide to come down for some of these mud sharks that will be running the river soon. we will send you home with a truck load if you want them  ;D ;D

I ate some last week, they are fine. We were fishing for white perch and got a few yellows. We don't see yellow perch big enough to fillet here that often. I bought a $18 electric bread knife from Wally world and made short order of 35-40 fish. I have eaten them sense I was a kid.
