Title: Any Fellow Surfcasters?
Post by: lowaccord66 on Jul 27, 2017, 09:44 AM
Its not spoken about much here but I am a surf addict for stripers.  Anyone else?

Only when I don't have a boat available... In the past, I have done a great deal... After wading out on Joppa flats one-morning catching stripers and having to wade back in because of the tide, I thought to myself, I could be fishing here out of my canoe... Next trip down was with the canoe and (at that time) I caught more stripers and bigger stripers than I ever had from shore... I also go a little crazy when I am stuck on the shore watching busting fish... I own a few surf casting rods but only pull them out when I don't have a choice. My point is I like surf fishing, but like boat fishing more... Even if boat fish don't count!

A few times a year, not really seriously.  Island Beach State Park. Only about a two hour drive, take the wife and beach tent and just enjoy the day.

Ive been doing more boat fishing myself Allan.  Im at work day dreaming about the bass I am going to habe a shot at tomorrow and saturday night.  Its the right time to get a 50.

Ive been up and down the coast from ft popham in Maine to Montauk.  Never made it to ISBP but its on the list (decent sharls can be caught from shore there now)  I was strictly a surf guy until I figured out the canal...now I spend a majority of my time there.

I've been to Maine many times, mostly for a weekend trip. Hard to find a good sandy shore to fish from, mostly rocks and cliffs where I go to. Usually take a trip in the very early summer and in the fall every year.

Its been a few years since I have been but I liked the coast up there...spefically the rocks.  I have always been a fan of fishing rocky shorline for them.

I have caught plenty of stripers from a boat, the beaches, a rocky shore, off break waters. For me there is no comparison as to the feel of a big striper on your line in the canal.

Definitely an addict here.  I take my family on vacation every year in September to the best hot spots in New England.  Started in Montauk then various other Long Island locations, Rhode Island, Connecticut and Cape Cod.  Stripers and blues are a blast but when I got into some false albacore tuna I found another new addiction.

I chase the albies too but do that more in the boat.  I like the vineyard in late Sept, early October for them.

Trips to FL or MB, SC I will always take 2 surf casting SW rods and reels.
But this only happens every 2-3 years.
Heading to MB for xmas week with the wife this year.
I will take my rods for sure.

same here.
I didn't sleep 3 hrs last night.
Up again at 5am
I'm struggling.
We have a small private walleye derby slated for tomorrow.
Winds and waves don't look favorable for my small Lund.
I'm hoping it gets moved to Sunday.
Would allow me to catch up on my sleep a little too.

I used to surf fish a lot when I lived on DelMarVa years ago, but have since put those rods away in favor of canoe and now boat fishing Lake Champlain.
Chased stripers, blues sea trout, flounder, croakers, whitefish, sharks...you name it...beaches from Rehoboth all the way to Assateauge...and bayside too, Chambridge to Nanticoke to Crisfield, Ocean City...really enjoyed beaches and jetties &  back bays.

Very cool Mudchuck.  I want to try some southern casting soon.  Catching a big drum from the surf is definetly on the list.

I did a little casting on the Outer Banks 2 years ago and fishing was pretty slow but lots of spinner and blacktip sharks around.  Tried at night a few times with cut bait in the surf but no luck.  I fished a pier one day and kept catching pinfish with shrimp so I put one on a shark rig on my other  broomstick of a rod with 80 lb mono while I continued to have fun with the pinfish.  Didn't my baitclicker go off so I  engaged the reel and Fish On.  The rod just about doubled over and line was screaming off my Penn offshore trolling reel and never stopped until it reached the distant surfers and stopped, did a U turn, and came straight back at me and under the pier as my line was rubbing against a pier support and eventually snapped before I ever caught a glimpse of what I hooked i had into.  The pier bait shop owner said it was probably a huge redfish since they love pinfish but didn't rule out a shark or a large ray.  Who knows, but definitely had my heart racing and the biggest fish I ever hooked into.

The island is great for anything you want to do. A day trip makes for a long day if driving home. I usually go to Point Pleasent and stay the night, (kind of pricey) . Can also fish the channel there if nothing else going on. Also some good food there.

Lowaccord:
Love the picture!  Looks like a great fish. I was at that spot two weeks ago catching schoolie bass on the fly. Blues were thick at Wasque, and we caught some decent bass up island. Two year's ago there was epic albie fishing in the Gut.  I typically access it via Chappy because I can hit East Beach as well.

I have fished the Derby the last 25 years, and absolutely love it. Previously I was a hard core eel-slinger at Squibbie and Stonewall, and didn't pay much attention to the hardtails. Then I caught one on a fly and was addicted. Problem now is when I go out there I fish non-stop around the clock. Albies in morning, blues in the afternoon, bass all night.

This fall I hope to get out there twice, one week per trip.  Look for a white Nissan with a white homemade rod rack on the bed, that's me!

I love fishing, but surf fishing to me is the absolute best!

...another thing that is great about fishing the Vineyard.  I have $4K worth of rods/reels on top of my truck.  I can park at a remote beach lot, fish all night, and return to my truck 8 hrs later and everything is untouched. Try that in Pulaski, they'll break your truck window to steal a bobber off your dashboard.

Count  me in. I've always did some surf/salt  fishing but have become infatuated with it lately, having had a great 2016 fall on the northeast coast. That, coupled with a few Florida trips for redfish and snook, I'm leaning more salt than fresh lately, all from shore.  Hit Maine and did well in June and had fun with the bluefish on Long Island in May. Don't want to wish summer away but can't wait for the fall push.

Just got back from my annual 4 days in Maine and absolutely crushed the stripers while wading throwing topwater plugs and trolling the tube and worm from the canoe.  Only one keeper bass but just a ton of fun catching many 15" to 20" stripers on my walleye tackle.  No trip would be complete without a couple stops at Bear's Bait in Kennebunk to pick up some worms.

How far out are you taking this canoe?

How far out are you taking this canoe?

Not out in the ocean kind of far :o  Fishing a tidal bay and inside some islands with my trusty Radisson.  Great canoe for trolling because of the oarlocks.  The guy that owns Bears Bait has the exact same one hanging in his garage.  He says he bought it and never used it.
