i used to use pro- cure  and other commercial egg cures until an old timer told me about stream hardening.   now i just put the eggs in a big zip lock bag and ad cold water rite from the stream then let them sit for 10 to 15 minutes and drain the water,  it hardens the egg s just enough so they don't  break when you freeze them and they keep their natural scent and color

For some reasons salmon eggs have never seemed to work as well as worms for me. Now I do think they work pretty good on smaller creeks for abundant trout. But even then I like to sweeten the hook with a piece of crawler along with the egg.

I have used Pautzkes eggs and Mikes for years with great success, along with homeade cured skein. But i have found great success with Berkely power eggs fished the same way. They also float up , keeping your bait off the bottom, and you can catch many fish on one egg because of their rubber-like consistency.

I like that idea to. I just got some steelie eggs, a few anyway , and I wish that I would have done that with them. I soaked them in saltwater. I have never cured eggs before, so I am very new at that kind of stuff, but by next year I will know more about it, since I hope to get a few good females for her eggs

Their are several ways to cure eggs. One old timer told me to try 7UP and it works good. Another cure is the old standby of Borax Just roll the eggs in it and the membrain toughens up . Another cure I use that is cheap is get a bottle of Boric Acid from the drug store and mix with warm water it will release the eggs from the Skein then mix a little with the loose eggs and add sugar it will make a good cure to tye sacks with. Trout eggs Seem to work the best And Brown trout work even better on Steelheads.

Dry eggs partially, and apply Pro-cure.  Don't dry if using mesh bags.  Freeze if need be for up to ???? months.

i use eggs 90% of the time for steelhead.
my reflexes are too slow these days for artificials, the fish seem to hold on to the eggs a bit longer

here's a few stream hardend yummy sacs

top row  =  larger chartruse and hot pink  for stained water
middle row= med size-chartruse ,pink, peach and white for lightly stained water
bottom row= dime size and smaller  pink ,peach and white for gin clear water

the big steelhead  can't resist e'm

This is an old post but here's my 2 cents.
I use canola oil only (mineral oil will also work).
I let the eggs dry in the frig (loose eggs or scrap them from the skein) for about 8 hours. I then put them in airtight containers and pour the oil over them. The oil seems to keep the eggs from freezer burn.
I'm anxious to try the same method but vacum pack them.

good luck

i dont cure them i just throw in 2 ziplock bags and in the freezer till needed haven't had any problems with them yet. jus leave all the juices in with the eggs. but i prefer salmon eggs.

Ive tried a few cures and I really dont get everyones SECRET CURE . Its all about putting the eggs in front of the fish and having eggs that arent bloody. The salt / sugar  and a bit of borax for a cure works great. The only problem i have is getting them to set up and harden up sometimes. Even when river hardening.
