I went to a boat dealer and bought a can of aluminum oxide primer which can be used sparingly. Then I bought my paint (KRYLON))  in rattle cans from Menards, masked the boat off and sprayed it. It came out great.

I too want to paint an aluminum canoe. How long ago did you do your boat?
Ice Dawg:
I painted it in 2000. I bought a different boat in 2002, but I see my old boat on a lake all the time and my son does too. It still looks great.

If you need just a little then buy aluminum primer spay can from nearest marina (about $18).
