Milliken was painfully slow yesterday from first light to 11am. Not sure how afternoon went. 5 people fishing, including my father and I. ZERO fish, ZERO hits for everyone there. Threw in the towel and went ice fishing. Last Sunday was decent, and Monday was better.

A friend and I fished the east shore today after work and caught a brown at 16" on some steelhead scane. It was a Gorgeous afternoon today on the lake. 3mph wind... Just perfect out there. Hope to get out again this weekend.
5 people at mililken in January? Gee wonder why?

Not sure what you mean by that ("5 people at Milliken in January?" NK. That's a light crowd)...but anyway...
Cool that you hooked up today. 16" ain't bad. Winds might pick up tomorrow. Good luck if you make it out!

Oh, and there was a pretty good size crowd at T-Point this afternoon. Possibly the biggest I've seen this winter. I didn't get a chance to make rounds and talk w- anybody (had a child in tow), but there were 4 - 5 guys at every fishing kiosk.

Hello everyone I'm not trying to steal the thread as I was just hoping for some very general information. Going up to Cayuga in June (3rd week), I've never fished it nor have I ever caught a laker. The place, we are staying at is in Ithaca and will only be in a pontoon. Thought I would vertical jig since this rig will not be set up for trolling. Is the lower portion of this lake a viable place for lakers. Looks like from what I read everyone stays up toward Aurora. Similarly, will I have opportunities at bass at the bottom or will I be just taking the family for a boat ride. I figured I could try to target docks using shaky heads and other various forms of plastic presentations but again the intel on this lake is lacking online and I'm not going 30 some miles up top. Thanks for any and all information.

I've thought about this all winter and its driving me crazy! This year I'm sad to say that I will be making the jump from Cayuga to Seneca. Ill be stationed at the mouth of Cathrine Creek hoping to catch some new personal best fish this year. I fished Cayuga for around 5 years I believe. I've gotten to know the southern part of the lake like the back of my hand. Im almost sick to my stomach thinking about not fishing Cayuga this year. Im not expert but I don't see how the lake can bounce back in any less than 5 years. I hope im making a smart move. The worst part of making the move is that im concerned that the extra distance to Seneca will deter my friends from wanting to fish with me. Anyone in the Watkins area that would like to go out sometime and troll let me know!

well - I just got a small fishin boat! 14' Tracker w 40 hp Merc and nice Minn Kota with the auto pilot, etc....not a real trolling setup for lakers and trout (yet).....so I probably won't be bringin it down to Cayuga this season......gonna spend some time up here in the Seneca River system and down on Otisco and Skaneateles Lakes.....huntin tigers mostly.
but my buddy and I
will
try some Cayuga Lake trollin in his boat again this season....but if nuthin continues to happen - like the last couple years - we're also gonna try Seneca......
unfortunate....its been a great run on the south end....I think we've been down there for about 7 yrs now and I caught some awesome fish.......but not lately.
I have to agree that it will probably take some years to get this fishery healthy again.......what a bummer.
....and hey Vogel - I'll try to get out with you down there this season.....lemme know.......Seneca is a long hike for me but we'll work somethin out......one of these days.

also - I just heard a guy capsized his boat on the south end today.....south of Meyers....almost drowned.....another boater found him clinging to his wreckage almost frozen......saved his butt and towed his boat back to Meyers.....said he hit a log and had been in the water for an hour.......back end of his vessel was destroyed......
BE CAREFUL.

I got a couple of buddies in the DEC and they have not breathed a word of anything bad with Cayuga? So what is going on with the fishery?

well not countin zebra mussels and the hydrilla problem........
its mainly due to 2 separate lamprey weir breaches in 3 years due to flooding.....about 5-6 yrs ago......has allowed those d**n eels to decimate the fish population.....for the last 2 or 3 years now almost every brown and salmon I've caught has either real ugly marks or as many as 2 or 3 lampreys attached.......the lampreys have a 4 yr life cycle and the 2 breaches separated by a year allowed them to overlap.......the lamprey population exploded......there were so many that we even caught them trolling.....right Mr Vogel???....and even after this invasion is over it will take some years for the salmonoid population to rebound...(imo).......DEC did report having a very difficult time getting the usual number of laker eggs at T Point last year and spent extra time trying.....only got a third of the eggs they normally harvest....according to what I read......
I can only say from first hand experience - as far as browns, salmons, lakers, rainbows are concerned - that we just are not catching the fish we used to catch 6 or 7 yrs ago.....its been real tough.....gettin skunked has become common....catchin nuthin but a couple dinks is now the norm....
very sad.
