You need a mono backing for two reasons.  First the braid will slip on the reel if you don't have a backing.  Second you can save the braid and use it on more rods with a mono backing.  To properly fill the reel for good casts can either use a whole spool of braid to fill the reel or mono to fill it 2/3 the way and then braid the rest of the way.

Double uni or albrihght knot.  If doing hte double uni make sure you wrap 6-8 times with the braid and 5-7 with the mono.  Wet, pull tight and snip tags off.

I only put a few wraps of mono then fill the reel with Braid, I want that 300+ yd for the long runs that the tuna make! As for brand of braid I use with the freshwater, I use to use PowerPro, but now use MasterBraid from Cortland. Check on any tuna board, if you want to test a line, test it on tuna!

We don't catch a whole lot of tuna in this part of the country.  Most years I don't even bother buying the tuna stamp.
