One thing I found when I was tying foam beetles, ants, etc., and using black mono leg material was that I could give a much more lifelike appearance to the bug by taking my smooth jaw mini needle-nose pliers and making a crimp about halfway on the leg so that it simulated a joint or "segment" as an insect would have. It looks good and there's NO WAY you're gonna tie a knot in that stuff and make it look right!

Don't think so... too smooth for those two materials unless maybe he stripped them first....

Knotted phesant tail fibers. They're remarkably durable and they flutter around in the water in a more lifelike manner than mono.

One more with the one we're after and we'll have two.

have you guys seen the flies that are all the rage in europe for carp fishing?   They call it "ZIG" fishing, and rig them up just like they would corn or boilies, except that they use a much longer leader so the flies float up off the bottom further.

Cute ;D

Looks like they cheat and use juice on the fly. May as well toss a little crayfish out there.  I came close to opting for that this morning. Had a pod feeding and 2 or3 lookers but no takers.

Something special about a clean catch on a fly.

Carp, and big carp especially.   They are about the hardest fish to sight fish with a fly rod in our neck of the woods.

Yea... for a big ugly fish that everyone takes for granted as being bottom feeding trash fish here in the US, they are definitely one of the most wary of all fish and at times VERY selective, especially if they've been hooked and released a time or two.

Those ZIG Bugs are pretty cool looking!

Here's my all time favorite bluegill fly. Bob's Foam Popper.
What you need:
1/4" foam (I get mine from Wally World. It's some kind of door knob craft stuff)
6/0 Uni or whatever thread you like. Orange is my favorite color for these
#10 curved nymph hook
Rubber legs. I use round medium orange
Super glue

Cut your foam into strips about 1/2" x 3/4" or so. Cut the face at a slight angle and taper the tail. No need to be too fussy, they seem to work no matter.

Most nymph hooks are offset. Bend the hook to be inline.

Cover the hook with thread from behind the eye to halfway around the bend. Return the thread to about even with the hook point and tie it off with half hitches or a whip finish.

Put a bit of super glue on the thread and tie in the foam body with a few ever tightening wraps.

A drop of superglue on the bottom will help make things a bit more durable.

I tie in one length of rubber legs affixing it to both sides then cut the loop to form the back legs. I've found using a single set of legs increases hookups dramatically.

Bite sized bluegill morsels.  ;D

A very simple fly that really works well.
