Trap same thing happens on the Manistee here in michigan and when the line stops it starts heading up river.. I think it is cause there trying to pop the egg with their tong.... thats why I use Octopuss hook and bend them a tad differently do when they squash the egg they get stuck better for a better hook set then you  do not to lose the fish.. any way no need to explain your actions some ridicule cause they don't know how to fish aND or why their doing this.. cause they have never experienced it them selfs..

it's  good to see  others   from all over  have  experienced this  same feeding pattern !  I have found that when attaching my hook I run the line threw the eye in the same side as the bend  then snell the hook after you  will notice the  hook point is  straight up!  this  is  use  full  well the  king rolls the  egg around in his  mouth to pop it! ............boondox thanks for sharing ^5

Thanks here is what I do to the hook with pliers the one that lays flat aginst table is a brand new hook... the one that is bent up off table is the adjusted hook.. the adjusted hook tends to help when they pop the egg it sticks them in the mouth on the squish giving time to set the hook..

I remember one time while jigging in a hurry just tied on a new jig and missed a few (scratching head ) I then noticed
I didn't off set the hook ,  big game changer 👍
