Those  are about 3 1/2". Good rock bass size ;D

Fishgalore, may I ask who Lee Well is? Speaking of deer hair, my friend gave me Dave Whitlock's book, "The Fly Tyer's Almanac". Circa 1975. A great reference for deer hair techniques. I tie Adirondack style flies for him. He's tried to tie but has problems with it. He's a heavy guy with fingers like sausages and hands like hams. They just don't work well.

I'll need a bump in my bifocals for those teeny tiny Tricos :-\   Nice ties Choo Choo!
During the season I also tie to experiment or replenish. When I worked ( Happily I retired last year) I would get up,early and tie a few before I left for work. Then again when I got home in the evening. I can get lost at the bench or in the stream. The world just melts away ;D I also build rods, but that's more like work.

What line/leader combinations are you using to fish those?

Just a couple months now boys.

RG- Lee Weil is a renown female tyer and deer hair specialist. Here is a link to her website. http://www.leeweilflies.com/  I believe she is out on Long Island.

It looks like you used some deer hair on those gobies, nice!

Gump & Choo Choo nice work as well.

It's gonna take practice to get better at this stuff and my time is limited. Here's the 2 patterns we did today. The 1st is a peanut bunker the other for freshwater bass, pike, etc....  It looks like I could trim tighter on the peanut bunker and make it slender. She pointed out that you can always cut more off but once cut you can't put it back on. So I may do some more trim work on it. Hers was definitely more slender.

The boys asked for bigger...so....

Choo Choo,

Thanks for the info. Have you ever tried furled leaders? I'd love to send you a couple to play with. I started making them a few years back after seeing an Internet forum dedicated to their construction. I've never seen a tapered or tied leader turn over a tippet and fly like a furled. I made a jig that allows me to make them any length up to 10'. The last couple of seasons I've been playing with hi-vis butt and tip sections. I've been very pleased with the results. They last season after season which makes an old cheapskate like me very happy ;D

That's more like it!  ;) What do you think Dom? ;D You are very creative Bob!

Very nice flies choo choo and fishgalore!

Nice looking flies.

Deer hair can be a bugger....so to speak! I find less is better as you add. (Trapper taught me that) Smaller bunches and some form of packing. As far as trimming is concerned, I've tried everything from razor blades to barber shears. The best ive found is Dr Slick adjustable razor scissors. I have both the 2" and 4". Awesome for trimming with super fine, sharp points. ;D

I used sculpin hair for my flies. Some dubbed, some spun. Not really sure which I like best.

Did some PT nymphs yesterday.

Gotta do a couple more sizes and some hares ears next. Love tying these things. Real classics .

Here's a cool old video of Frank Sawyer tying his PT nymph. He used only wire....salvaged from old lamp cords. Wish there was sound.

Nice looking Bob.
I used to fly fish many years ago.
Haven't in maybe 25+ years.
Because we will be moving to Florida when we retire in 5 years I have been thinking very serious about taking it back up.
Tarpon and snook would be awesome on a fly rod down there.
And doing it with some of my own hand tied flies and streamers would really add the cherry to things.
Your thread here has lit the fire.
Thanks.
Mac

Yeah, I think I'm going to the bench tonight because it's snowing yet again.  :'(

This weather pattern stinks.

They might be for a friend of mine named Jim....and for just that purpose. Maybe :whistling: :whistling:

Sleeting here now after 3 hours of steady snow. I was just watching the news and pics of my old commute out of the city. Can you say PARKING LOT :rotflol: :rotflol: :rotflol:

I love being retired!

You need to explain " Short line nymphing" to me.
