fishing kayak mods? looking for cool ideas!
« on: Jul 16, 2011, 07:09 PM »
Picked up a 9ft old town kayak today and I'm looking for some cool mods that other people have done for their kayaks. I have a rod holder. And I'm thinking about possibly purchasing a showdown fish finder to mount on the back somehow. The only concern I have is how to  mount it in the “cockpit“. And are the showdowns somewhat water proof for wet weather operations?  Thanks again.

or build your own anchor... cheaper that way.

even if you are planning a day of bass fishing an anchor comes in handy with

a kayak. the slightest breeze will push you around. it helps keep you on the spot
without constantly having to paddle back to your hole.

a 9' kayak is prety small and would get cramped up easily. i'd keep it simple.

I am seeing this post a little late. I can get some pictures tonight if you would like to see my modifications. Let me know. If not welcome to the rigging club anyway!

I have spent a couple years honing my 'yak. My ride is a Hobie Revolution. I think of my boat as a pick-up, and the type of activity that I going to do as the load out. Here are a couple of the main load outs.

These are all thumbnails, so click to see the full sized image.

Stock-exploring, touring, photography.
Seat, Mirage Drive

Sailing-

Fly Fishing- This mod includes Outriggers, which are optional, I use them so I can stand and sight cast when possible.

All Other fishing- Bass, Trolling, Inshore(striper)

---Other mods that are interchangible.
Hand Held GPS:

Garmin GPSMAP CSx 60 with a Ram size A ball and short arm.

Fish Finder-

It is an Eagle Cuda 168 in a shoot thru hull configuration.

Anchor Trolley

The anchor trolley can be switched sides, and can be used with a stake out pole, drift chute, brush anchor, or grapnel anchor.

That is a lot I know, but if anything interests you, or you have any questions, just ask, Ill do my best to answer.

The outrigger is a Hobie AMA, also called a sidekick. I got them from wiscasset trading post a little while back. They do indeed make the yak stable enough to stand, given it is pretty calm out. The boat is probably stable enough by itself, but I am not.  The hardest part is sitting down, or kneeling to grab a fish, you never know when the boat might not be under your butt.

That is a wicked nice ride Surf. Well rigged, looks easy to use. A nice office indeed.
Ever think about putting an anchor trolley on for adjustment while on anchor? Or use a drift chute to set up a nice run with limited paddling?

Thanks, she's been a sweet ride for me ! I'm usually Trolling or anchored up fly casting, I just adjust the anchor line in the deck cleat if I need to.  The one time I used a drift sock, I was live lining Macks for Stripers and hooked a big Cow, everything was fine untill it went under the yak and spun me 180 degrees ! It couldn't have been timed it any better, it turned me sideways to the waves and the pressure from the drift sock instantly rolled me !! Thanks, but I'll pass on the drift socks from now on !

With all them modifications its a wonder she floats for ya!  Living in the ghetto of sanford where I do, somebody stole my kayak off of my truck middle of the day sunday. after having it for 2 months, and all the cops can tell me is check pawn shops otherwise somebody got a free christmas. So I've given up on the effort of having something nice and worthwhile. If you have junk nobody else will want it.
