If you have downriggers (or if you don't and don't wanna deal w/ live bait) trolling large minnow plugs usually produces some fish. 15-20lb test is all you really need, although most guys use heavier line. In terms of live bait, bloodworms, sandworms, clams, and especially chunk and live herring, work well. Drifting with a sliding sinker rig works well, and some anglers use large slip floats. Fresh herring works best, and you can jig them right out of the river with whats called a sabiki rig, which can be purchased at any local bait shop. Shore fishing is productive as well, and a scap net and stoolie will get you all the herring you need. Live bait on a sliding sinker rig is the way to go from shore.
Hope this helps perch-hound.
Good luck!

Fished again today w/ chunk herring off the railroad tracks in Highland. 1 small channel cat. Some other guys using worms only got small channel cats and a few eels.Tried the stoolie/scap net, no followers, nothing at all. Water real murky.

Fished the tracks in Highland yesterday from 3pm-7pm. Stoolied up 1 herring, put it out live, no runs. Caught 1 small white catfish on chunk. The guy that left as I arrived caught a nice 25 pounder on live.

Fished from shore in Hignland. Extremely windy, and the water had zero visibilty. Couldn't scap a herring for my life (pretty sure the turbidity had a lot to do w/ that.) Fished chunk without any luck. Hopefully it clears up soon.

I've heard there have been lots of guys out in boats marking fish, but have been unable to hook up. The fish are definitely there. The water is gonna be very murky, though.

Hit the river above Albany Sunday. Herring were there. Stripers too, but not very numerous. We landed one @ 17lbs on a live one. Nothing on chunk. Also had a few sturgeon snag themselves on our bottom rigs. Water temp was 47.0-47.5.

Nice reports good and bad. I'm sure a lot of guys appreciate the posts. Looks like a few fish from Troy finally so maybe they'll catch a few in the Ale House tourney this Saturday. I should probably get my boat out.
Saw lots of boats (and some really small ones) on my way home from work today around the Poestenkill.
