Just hold them for a short time and they will usually relax.. Also helps to pick them from soil that has been tilled or loosened up.. I hate picking them from the lawn as 1/2 fet away before my old fingers can get them...

Yep, let up on the pressure a bit, then give them another pull. seems like they loose the grip a little when you do.

What type of grass is best for picking nightcrawlers? When I was a kid, we found them under hedges in loose dirt. In the summer, they would mate and we would get a bunch. I think some people drench their grass to get them out. I saw a video on utube about using electric prongs. It works, but be careful if you try it or you'll get shocked. I wonder if a small 12 volt battery  hooked up to two screwdrivers would work?

I heard grass that has a lot of crabgrass has a lot of crawlers. Do you think fertilizing your grass has a negative effect on them?

Other than birds and deer, my lawn gets nothing. It grows fast enough without it..

the best grass is on golf course greens after a rain, and best of all they are completely out of the holes and easy to grab.  if you haven't tried you should, i got about 70 in under half an hour last week after an evening rain ;)

Yes they are. Just got in from picking 100. I've got about 350 now. Think I will give them a break until I run low...
