I did a little driving last night and was excited to see every side of the road puddle and pond from Warrensburg to Stony Creek wide open.
Rods are now ready and the pack is packed.  ;D
We're doing a small pond in the Southern Adk to get the legs going and hopefully wet a line. Wish us luck that we don't find ice.
I'll post again later reporting what we find. Hopefully my post will include pics of our 1st pond fish of the year.  ;D

We found our pond 1/2 clear of ice. It was enough to wet our lines. (Warren County)
I was shocked to get blanked, but we had an awesome time either way. I got one fish to take a stab at a Phoebe, but he avoided the camp fire.
We hiked in 1.5 miles on a marked trail. Another mile bushwhacking around the pond and another mile back down to the car.
No amazing feat for myself, but my boys impressed the heck out of me today. (9 and 12)

4/21: I visited one of my old haunts that had been recently reclaimed near the Essex and Warren county border.
My friends and I watched the last of the ice melt off while we ate lunch.
There were no fish to be caught, but plenty of cans to pick up.  >:(

Question for you guys that may be more up to speed than I: What is the story on the Essex County chain of lakes? One of the properties that the state bought from Finch. Will we be able to fish it this year? Or is it off limits until they settle on a classification?

Great thread man look forward to following this all season. Walked into Jabe with my hornbeck yesterday it was clear of ice (and biting fish)  sadly I played garbage man as well took out a shopping bag worth of crap.  Such a shame people cant respect our planet. I caught these guys in a wilderness pond Monday 4/21.  The rainbow was taken on a little Cleo and the brown was on a worm.  Brookie, Brown, and Rainbow in the books.

Berkley4life,  That scenery reminds of a high-peaks pond I used to visit in my younger days.  Don't think I could make there now-a-days.
Some nice fish - thanks for the PICs.
Im headed for my Adirondack cabin this weekend and some brookie fishing.  8)

A backwoods pond and primitive camping trip is a very close 2nd to ice fishing for me.
Let's share some tips, tricks, pics and adventures here.

I'll start with a couple lessons I learned on an adventure with my kids last summer.
If you're going relieve yourself in the woods... BURY it!!!  :P
If you're going to let kids roam the woods on their own... Don't let them wear flip flops.
I have a 9 year old that will forever remember the time his older brother had a piece of dad stuck to the bottom of his foot.   :-X

Sorry to share such a gross story, but I literally collapsed on the shore of that pond in a fit of tears and laughter.
On that note. Who's ready to get out chasing brookies in the back woods?!
