Ice out Crappie
« on: Apr 15, 2014, 06:46 PM »
So, I'm still after all these years trying to figure out Crappie fishing. I do really well with other panfish, but Crappie still allude me.
I would very much like anyone willing to mentor me...any takers?

I've never really targeted them per se, but always seem to get decent numbers if I'm fishing "ditches" and getting bigger gills and seeds. Have yet to find a table fish that will resist a crawler or minnow!
Fly fishermen have longer rods.

And in or near brush...
One more with the one we're after and we'll have two.
The brook trout is the prom queen of the trout world, and a promiscuous prom queen at that!

Location, location, location.... it's key.Small bays, Marinas and canal arms exposed to the sun off of the main lake are the 1st places to start. if you see un-developed shoreline with emergent vegitation like cat tails and reeds, all the better. they will be suspended somewhere  in these areas litterally THE DAY the ice clears. so be ready. When that happens, small  jigs ,(hair or plastic) will slay em. make sure your bobber is sensitive enough to  detect the lift bite .cause it will make the difference between limiting and going home with a few.

The ideal water temperature for crappie to spawn is 62 to 65 degrees.
