ice boom bad news lake erie !!!!!

The fish will just travel West til they get agreeable temps to unload their eggs,on the other hand my last icefishing trip in Chautauqua had the males spewing milt while the females were dropping loose eggs.The whole thing always seems to work out,this isn't the first time the lake froze up this long so don't sweat it!

The ice is melting but still a lot out there.
Lots of muddy water out west too.
The darker water warms faster on sunny days.
We need lots more of the threw W's
Wind, waves, and warmth.

Even if they decide next Monday to yank it, it will take them 3-5 days to pull the entire thing, depending on weather and waves.
Then it will take a few days to a week for the ice to get out of the lake.
So we are talking maybe 2 more weeks at minimum before the ice is gone.
And that's if they don't keep it in at the 250 square mile mark because of ice thickness.

The lesser of two evils, the boom in delays everything on Erie, the boom pulled can cause problems on Ontario, slushing harbors, delaying or canceling LOC derby's that start next weekend....Either way someone is not going to be happy.

Mother Nature always has her ways. Who knows, this might be a banner year. This is not the first time we've been in this situation. Time will tell!!!

Was out to my place on Lake Erie at Point Breeze yesterday and opened up.
Ice field was mostly east of there.
But there was a lot of huge chunks still out there floating around.
East of the bay, over near Rats it was still iced in.
Didn't make it to Sturgeon Point, but checked the web camera there a few minutes ago and there's a lot of ice still there.

FYI - if you used the Point Breeze launch in the past, it's now closed to the public.
We went 100% private and if you aren't a resident, you can't come in anymore.
Good for us, not so good for you.
We have been fighting with the outsiders and jetskiers for years and the owners finally consented.
So you now have to either head west to the Catt or Dunkirk, or east to Sturgeon.

Just read the entire thread - interesting stuff.  I did not know of the ice boom until reading this thread and the attached links.  Kind of sucks for Erie guys chomping at the bit to get out.  Think I'd I've gone crazy by now if that was my home water.

Here is the water temps for Erie.  It won't be long so be careful if you try to get out for the opener.  Lots of trees and ice burgs to make a Titanic II.
