My brother-in-law is a doctor. While at fishing camp my daughter found a tick attached to the underside of her knee. He went to his Prius and pulled out his kit. He took out the tweezers, gently grasped it as close to the skin as possible and applied steady pressure. It took about 1 1/2 minutes for it to release. Then alcohol swab.

I've heard of a hundred methods on tick removal, now after reading this thread 110  ::) , I was always under the impression that ticks twist into you like a screw and that you should absolutley 100% put petroleum jelly on them and turn them counter clockwise out.. The petroleum jelly makes it so their legs cans and head cant grab and twisting counter clockwise makes it so the head doesnt break off... Now Ive seen the method i just explained performed many times and performed it myself, and have been told by professionals that it is a very safe removal...

That all said, if you're worried about toxins getting in you from trying to remove a tick and considering the little buggers, welll,,,,, are already in you, and wether its rocking them , pulling them, burning or twisting to get them out i think we are all a little late and considering inflation about 10 dollars short..

We were biting this morning, we were biting this morning, we were biting this morning......

For what it's worth the woman who addressed our group said if you look at a tick under a microscope you will see that their "tentacles" or whatever they are called are barbed similar to a fish hook and the best way to remove them is to slowly pull them straight out.

The larvae are really tough to spot .... they start off the size of a poppy seed and are only the size of a sesame seed when engorged so it is easy to see why we don't always find them on us   :o

Riverrat you're absolutely correct , and you don't always get  a rash and can have Lyme , i was informed of that by my doctor a few days ago after being bit . This stuff can be serious and should be checked out if you get bit .

I know this is an old post and this subject has been beat but I recently became aware of a test kit to check ticks [at least for Lyme].I'm somewhat skeptical considering historical controversies with test results of humans. Here's the link:http://lymealyzer.com/index.php

Because the more antibiotics you take, the less effective they are when you really need them...   :(

Yup and the RX will probably be for Doxycycline Hyclate .... for 28 days.

.... and one side affect - Avoid prolonged or excessive exposure to direct and/or artificial sunlight while taking this medication.

I said screw it, when a friend rented a camp on a lake close to me - only four hours in the morning (wearing a long sleeve shirt) and my hands fried !!!

I'm talking the burning sensation you get ice fishing with zero degree temps and you get your hands wet for too long. That pain lasted for 2 days before it started to go away.

My family member just got diagnosed with Lyme Disease.  You have to hit it hard with Antibiotics ASAP.   At a high dosage too.  Most doctors only give by the book dosages but a specialist will recommend Double.  He was also tested for Lyme only a couple days after his bite.  Negative.  Lyme disease take up to 3 months to show in the human body.
