Great Falls - Fishing off the bank
« on: May 15, 2014, 09:19 AM »
We recently moved to the Lower River Rd area in GF. Can the kids and I expect to see any success walking down and throwing a line in from anywhere along the bank? What should we be using and what can we expect to find?

Thanks!

There's some good trout holes up along the river in that area.  Been years since I've fished it, so not sure of location anymore.  But the river holds many fish, used to target perch up at Big Bend.  Carp and bullheads are plentiful anywhere around Great Falls.  Hopefully you can find a hole or two within walking distance that will let the kids catch fish.

Thanks, Robbi. Any suggestions on what I should be using to target those Perch, Carp & Bullheads?

I'm a worm man.......never experimented much other than using bobbers for the perch and a marshmallow or something to make the worm float off the bottom a bit for the other species.......hopefully someone else chimes in here to give better info.........I've heard of some mystical walleyes areas up river from the country club..........

In the summer I fish out there almost every day. Trout and perch is all I've caught so far. I heard about a couple walleye spots too but haven't found any for myself
Fish on! Hold my beer!

I've heard some rumors of some deep holes with rather large walleye in them.

I wanted to get this back in circulation...

I've had some luck floating down the river from Big Bend, but still haven't had so much as a nibble from off the bank. I've tried some rooster tails, minnows, various spinner rigs AND good old fashioned night crawler & bobber setups. What am I doing wrong from the bank?

I've had good luck with a floating jig with a minnow on it about 2' below a lindy type sinker.

I know people do fairly well for trout down by Giant Springs. I haven't fished around Great Falls much since morony and holter are so close by.
