Newbie here, please help . Mono or Braid ?
« on: Jul 21, 2014, 04:21 PM »
Getting my feet wet on this site & can't wait to contribute. Right now though, I need advice. Gonna troll small lakes & big ponds . I've always used sinking fly line & lead core ( 4 colors  most). Now, I have a down rigger & was wondering which line to use- mono or braid . Thanks folks , will appreciate all

I use mono on my downrigger rods. My main reason is because my releases work better with mono.

It is easier to set the tension on your releases with mono. When you use braided line it is very hard to get them set just right. And if you change lures to ones that have more drag you must reset them again.

I'd go with mono.   :)

Mono is my go to, generally speaking its easier to work with (releases and cutting) and its cheaper.  if your fishing any body of water that has our little invasive buddy the spiny water flea the braid is going to be an absolute nightmare.

fishing for salmoniods I go mono. Using braid it won't stretch and you are more apt to lose fish by ripping lips. Fishing for musky or pike 40lb spiderwire. Sharp hooks and no stretch drives the hook through their bony mouth. ;D
