Finally Found Them!
« on: Aug 16, 2014, 01:47 PM »
Got out last night with my friend and ended up with 6 keeper eyes.  We lost 2 keepers at the boat. Eyes were 15" to 18" and we caught them trolling cranks in 12 to 30 FOW.  SWT was 75 degrees.  Started fishing at 11:30 and fished to daylight.  It has been a slow summer for me after the great spring I had.  Hope this is the beginning because I go on vacation starting next weekend.

Nice chunky fish !! Nothing like that "Nite Bite".
Before they quit stocking the lake I fish in UP, we use to pound them casting 3/8oz safety pin spinners and Hot-n-Tots from dusk 'til 11:00pm. They would really tag those crank baits. They've got those teeth for a reason.

How in the heck do you keep them nasty bugs away from you?

My experience with the "nite bite" has been right at dark, mosquitoes come down like a cloud. Up north just before they come down you can actually hear them in the woods. Just a steady drone. I wear long sleeve shirt, hat, long pants. I spray hands, face and neck and ankles with the highest % of Deet I can find. For a half hour or so they will buzz around you like crazy but just have to ignore them. Not biting, just buzzing. After a half hour or so they will lift and after that they are pretty much gone, unless you get boat close to the bank where there are a lot of cattails or heavy vegetation. The rest of the night there aren't any!!!!

Just get a Thermacell they are worth every penny. No need for any chemical sprays. On windy days or nights they don't work but I've never had a need to use it then.

Only problem I have with the bugs is at the boat ramp. Once you get out on the water there is not any mosquitoes. Only occasionally there are some flying bugs. If your out there when a mayfly hatch starts it is absolutely horrible.

Good job Mark, I'm not sure I can fish all night like that anymore.
