About a 4" perch in a creek off Lake Ontario back in the early 60's while being taught to fish by my grandfather.
Wanted to bring it home for my uncle to clean and fry because my uncle loved perch.
Grampa said no.

My first fish (and many of the same species followed) was a horned dace from a creek about a quarter mile behind where we lived (and I still do live).  It was in a small creek down a steep ravine.  This was about 1960 give or take when I was a small kid.  Also remember "catching" a crab on my line, I dropped the pole and ran all the way home.  My mother reassured me the crab would be gone by the time we went back to retrieve the pole, she was right!
