TO START,it has one of the highest trout per mile then most
in n.y.--to me and just me i think this is the south's answer
to the ausable, lets tell it like it is these rivers need a big

My dad use to take us there around late 1970's ,1980's was fun..  But the  big rainbows below the first dam on Ashokan Reservoir was always fun....       ;D ;D

Unless you fish the head waters in big indian the Esopus is a terrible fishery. It gets wasted from floods, silt and the portal not to mention the rubber tube hatch .Have no clue why you would rate it above the big D or the waters in the adk's , just IMO

Place is a toilet compared to the delly. Maybe in 1970s was good but has gone way down hill from Irene. Its getting better but will still drive riggt past it. Ok lets put 15000 browns.to make.it.right. Needs lots of help. First year since flood I caught a rainbow slow trolling saws in a long time. Used to be a good fishery. Been.fishing it since 1985. Live 10 minutes from the res and creek

Just wondering, how do you catch (or how DID you catch back in the day) the big spawning rainbows and browns that would ascend the creek in the fall?  I hear guys still get rainbows in the 18-24 inch range in the spring, and I always wanted to try for myself.

How do you get the eggs? I don't go up north during the salmon and steelhead runs, as it is a VERY far ride for me, but the Esopus is the only local stream where I can get some local "steelhead". Is there anywhere around here I can get eggs?

Actually, on Saturday I was up right at the portal, and I caught a 15" walleye and a 12" brown on worms. I was completely shocked about the walleye. Must have either swam all the way from Ashokan or came down from Schoharie.
