O -BOY- you must not think that the local name given to a fish is right
i have checked my books,as far as i can tell the white perch and the
silver bass are TWO DIFFERENT fish[to me names given by locals are
limited]
let us do the white perch[morone americana]
classification
animalia
chordata
osteichthyes
perciformes
moronidae
morone
--morone  americana

silverbass is a term that descibes both species , i have an old map of Oneida lake  that also calls them silver bass but the are both whites

Is that a Sno-Suit or a Frabill Fred?

We used to catch what Gramps called silver bass. Seems like we picked em up off Dunham and Frenchman Islands. They were considerably larger than any white perch I’d seen. Are they still in Onieda??

Maine has some big white perch though - 15” + in some places. Mostly you find em in the 8” - 11” range.

Great info Guys! I've wondered about the difference and if what we caught were just big wp.

He might be Maine’s MG39’s brother. It’s a practiced art of the kill(er).  ;D

Now you're just gonna confuse it more! Those aren't white perch or bass, or even white crappie. I'd sure rather catch nice crappie like that then either of the others though.

And as long as they're crappie I'll take white or black. I run an equal opportunity frying pan.

MG39 is a lot of fun to fish with! Hope to make it out his way again this year.

Ok I'm the one that started this thread so what I did was I came home cleaned the fish and put 2 plain yellow perch fillets and 2 what we will call silver bass In a little olive oil and fried then with just salt and pepper did a taste test I found both to be white flakey meat. I guess I'll start saving and eating silver bass/white perch.
