Trolling Lake Clear Wabblers
« on: Oct 15, 2014, 08:03 PM »
I like to troll with Lake Clears and nightcrawlers in many backwoods brookie ponds, but I tend to gut hook many fish. I was wondering if anyone uses streamers behind a lake clear wabbler instead of a worm? I know guys like to troll streamers on fly gear, so I thought this technique should work. What do you think?

Yes, streamers work, grey ghost, black ghost, and beadhead wooly buggers have worked for me where regs were artificial only.

If you have needle nose pliers, there should never be a reason to leave a hook in a fish that you can see.  If a fish is gut hooked, take your pliers or needlenose, and very gently slide them through the back of the gills and into the throat.   You can very easily turn the hook now, and it will come right out the mouth.  The crucial thing here is not doing damage to the fish.   For trout, I always use a soft mesh net to hold them in and am extremely careful not to damage the gills filaments while working with the pliers.
