Hey guys. I'm planning on taking the boat out first time this season on Wednesday up at Rondout for some laker trolling action (maybe some browns too.) I'll be using dipsy divers, possible some flat lining depending on the depth of the fish. Overall, where depth wise do you guys think would be a good starting point? I've heard reports of a lot of lakers being caught deep, but also some being caught near the sirface. I know they're pretty spread out this time of year, just looking for any advice I can get. Thanks!

Gino, the lakers are indeed quite deep and are on the schools of Sawbellies, up to 130 feet down. I would either vertically jig with 2oz crippled herrings and walk the bottom while slowly drifting or drop bait down to the bottom. Some decent lakers are being caught with live bait right now!

Hope that helps & good luck!
Mike

Spent 3 hours casting from shore at Pepacton last Thursday. Not even a follow up. It looks like there is pretty good die-off of sawbellies this spring and they were circling on the surface and all over the shore. Birds were feasting and the fish too so it may be there is so much easy food around they don't even bother chasing a spoon. Hope to hit it again from the boat once the wind dies down.

Got a rather peculiar looking fish tonight with a bubble head! Must've been whackin it's head on the walls of the hatchery when it was a stocky!

Nice fish Mike.  Your fishing attire last few days has gone from ice fishing parka to tee shirt, guess we're heading in the right direction!!!

Thanks Tony! Was the first warmer evening we've had down here!  :D
Now we just need the water to warm about 15 more degrees and the real Rodeo begins!

Its going. I'm not going to be back for my usual opener tournament. We have been working 12hr days every day. Hope to be back before the pike move out onto deeper structure. Good luck, and keep sending the pics!
