Baby bowfin in Basha Kill
« on: May 27, 2015, 09:34 PM »
While bowfin fishing is widely documented at Basha Kill, I am actually posting to learn when the babies or juveniles are seen shoaling in the shallows.

For those Basha Kill fisherman who may have noticed swarms of hundreds to thousands of 2-3" baby bowfin, can you please reply to let me know when these are typically seen or, better yet, if they are around already?

Lastly, if there may be an area on the lake where they tend to concentrate, that would be very helpful to know as well please.

I am an aquatic biologist in NJ and looking to correctly time collection of babies for aquaculture study.

Thanks!

Why not ask the DEC,  when you get your collectors permit?

Thanks, but no worries about obtaining licensing to collect.  Of course I will.

My intentions are to reach out to some Basha Kill locals on the forum that would have first hand knowledge of the waters.
Department officials would not be expected to have that specific information.

you would be surprised...  ;)

FYI:  NY's DEC is divided into regions.   Each region has at least one fisheries biologist.   Most of those biologists are local fishermen themselves...and usually pretty dang good ones at that.
