sheepheads
« on: Sep 15, 2015, 07:10 AM »
My son brought me over one Sunday. It was huge. He said the lady who gave it to him found 3 in the Michigan City area that were 30 pounds each. I thought it being so big that it would be tough and not so good. It was delicious. Anyone else find any yet. I thought it was a bit early?????

I'm guessing he overestimated the weight a wee bit... that'd be 3 state record sized drum on one day.

There are a ton of 6 to 15 pounders in the MC harbor. July is usually prime time, as is September. But they can be caught from June-Oct pretty consistently

Please let me clarify. Sheepheads, (hen of the woods), that I am referring to are mushrooms. They were the size of bushel baskets. LOL

hahah that makes a lot more sense! People have been catching drum near Michigan City for awhile, and there's debate on how they taste, so it all made sense to me that you were talking about sheephead/drum/gaspergoo :)

I love spring rooms and have hunted them since I could walk but have never picked or positively ID ed a hen of the woods. I look at pictures but there always seems to different shapes, sizes, color that leave me with doubts about what I see in the woods. I think I'm going to have to be with some one that is an expert before I chance eating.

With all this rain and temps dipping into the 40's tonight, the mushrooms should start to appear. LOL... The fish might even put on the feed bag as well.

I sure wish I thought that way because I can't find morels to save my life. I'm going to check a few spots here in a bit. Probably could use a little rain

Yes, we need rain before they will be around the Wheatfield area.
