Trim/Tilt on 35 hp Merc Problem
« on: Sep 30, 2015, 07:11 AM »
A bit off topic but thought perhaps someone could shed some light on my problem.

Replaced trim/tilt motor on 35 hp Merc (1988) 2 seasons ago. Worked great until this month when motor will trim all the way up until tilt (Large ram) should take over but won't go any higher. Motor is running and trying but won't go any higher than trim position.

Anyone have any ideas?
Thanks,

I cant help you sorry. I know that Erwin's in Valparaiso works on mercury motors. Try giving them a call. They have been very helpful to me in the past. GOOD LUCK...

2nd on fluid levels. Sounds like it's not flowing ..check lines and levels.   Power trim is awesome when it works but what a pain when not..Good luck teach.                           B reak O out A nother T housand

X2 on fluid level you can also try bleeding system. Run trim up and open manual release screw to let it down, do a couple times to bleed system.

Going to go talk with "Pete" Peterson at Erwins. Good mechanic and good guy, has worked on my motor for years.

Info I received not too encouraging. Problem is likely  seals in large ram that tilts motor to highest point. If that is all it is, is fixable but might lead to other problems??? Might be time to look for a good new used one?

I'm no mechanical engineer but why would the tilt work with the engine running?
That would result in running the motor out of the water. Not good.
