What kind of fish is this???
« on: Oct 26, 2015, 07:00 AM »
My boss has a camp near Kring's Point (St. Lawrence River) and they came across this dead fish washed up in the shore.

Not the best pics. Not sure I have seen teeth this big on a fish in NY. Seems like a walleye shaped head and sort of like a carp body with big scales like a carp. But the teeth are huge.

So what is it???

My guess too. Scales are to big for a salmonid and it appears it has a the caudal fin of a bowfin although it's hard to tell.

X3 on bowfin. Look at the plates on its skull. Used to catch quite a few and also find them dead up there when I was a kid.

Alright, bowfin it is!

I guess the monster teeth had me scratching my head. I have never caught one. I assumed they had teeth more similar to a catfish or burbot.
