LAKE ONTARIO SPRING BROWNS 2016
« on: Mar 15, 2016, 06:55 AM »
Not sure if there was/ is a thread for this topic already, I looked but didn't see one. Anyway, myself and Wad made it out Saturday evening for the first boat trip of 2016. We decided that Oswego would be a good option seeing that walleye season was still open. We trolled the harbor and east of the break wall along the shoreline. Picked up this brown in the cut on a gold and black rapala. No eyes unfortunately. Water was a balmy 38 degrees. Lots of water coming out of the river too.  8)

Nice job Cheeks and Wad...that is a beauty .

I took the drift boat out at Mexico Pt. last Wednesday March 8. It was the earliest I ever got out on Lake Ontario. The battery seemed weak on the electric trolling motor, so I rowed the boat around out front of the river and a little west towards Dowie Dale. There was an Offshore breeze so I did not want to stray too far , and I ended up going 2 for 3 using sticks, on nice eating size silver browns. Would have loved to hook one like you got! I hope we have a long brown trout season this year.
I'm fishing my way through life .

Nice fish Choo Choo. I usually go east, I've had better luck over the years in front of Sage. 8)

Nice job. I fished Fair Haven out of my kayak on Sunday and the water ranged between 39 and 42 degrees with no trout landed but had the entire area to myself.  Is the break wall area in Oswego fairly protected from the wind?  I have wanted to try there but wasn't sure how bad the current from the river would be to control the 'yak.  Seems like Wright's Landing might be the easiest spot for me to drop in from?

Wrights is protected by the breakwall, look on Google Earth or Google street view. There is a hand launch on the river behind old city hall (Water St.) in front of Larry's? tackle shop. It would only take a second to park and check conditions. We have launched canoes there, but long ago.

Funny thing, I was using Street View on Google Maps to check this and it lets you turn and go inside the bar from Water street. You actually get a 360 degree view of the inside.

[Edit] almost forgot, beautiful fish guys!

Nice Browns guys. I took my mom and son on Sunday. We went 2/6. It was calm and sunny. Not a great combo. The weather was awesome though.

Thanks UglyStik I'll have to scope it out for browns so I'm familiar with the area before walleye season comes.  I'd love to get another 11#er or bigger from the big "O"  ;D

Had some guys staying with me last weekend troll out of mexico, Saturday they boated 16 browns, biggest being 9lbs, sunday was slower they only boated 7.  perfect mud coming out of the creeks raising the temps by 4-5 degrees compared too the surrounding waters, surprised they didn't get more.
