I owned a late 80's 20 hp evinrude.  When I bought it, I spoke to the mechanic and his comment was to run 50:1 all the time.  I did and had that outboard for over 20 years and never had an oil related issue with it.  Actually it was a very good outboard.

100 to 1 is too little oil. You risk cooking your motor at higher speeds.
The newer VRO motors will reduce mixture to 100 to 1 at idle and trolling and increase to 50 to 1 when you increase RPMs.
All OMC motors from early 60s up until oil injection came out in the mid to late 80s are 50 to 1 gas to oil mix.  The older motors with the pressurized tanks used twice as much.  The 50 to 1 motors had roller bearings on the rods and crank which require less oil.  The older motors had flat bearings which required more oil.
Kool Aid Kool Aid, Tastes Great, Wish we had some, can't wait.

Thanks for the replies, this one doesn't show any oil residue from being over oiled like some I see.  Will advise the new-bee to use 50-1 as its, most likely not going to be used for just trolling.  Meant to type too little oil  ;D

My 1985 30 hp Johnson has been running on 100:1 since I bought it in 1990 something. No issues whatsoever. If 50:1 makes you comfortable, I'm sure it will still run.

If you lend someone $20 and never see that person again, it was probably worth it.

Got a mid 80's Evinrude 15 hp longshaft that says right on the motor, 100:1, but oddly enough I run my 1995 25 hp Merc at 50:1.
