I've tried my green light at different depths and it didn't make much of a difference. The new light I'm making is going to be "super white" and it'll be hung just above the water. It always seems like the old school lantern guys are catching a few more

I run Both old school and new.
Greens just above therokline and floaters on top.

Vexilar and jigging rapalas work pretty good.

I use a lot of the standard glow tear drop ice jigs when fishing with a light.  I usually tip with a b-moth of a spike.   I have had good luck at times with slender spoons also, especially on crappie.   I always have a bobber and either worm or minnow out on the edges of the light.  Most of the times i have my light down about 2-4'.  I also hang a lantern on the side of the boat.  I feel this gives a lot of light out over the water as well as helps just seeing in general in the boat.  Plus I like my white gas lanterns.  The downside is it draws in a lot of bugs in the summer, sometimes they can be a bit annoying.
