April Risers

Good afternoon folks.  I was hoping to pick the brains of those who fly fish lakes during the ice-off period of spring.  Yesterday evening, I took my canoe out to a nearby lake that is in the process of opening up.  Much to my surprise, there were quite a few actively rising fish, particularly along the shelf of ice.  In your experience, what insect hatches this early?  I suspected midges, but didn't have any dries to try.  I was, however, able to pick a few off with a red zebra midge, trying to mimic the population of blood worms.
