Curious if there's any consensus on this. Slower the better? Under 2 mph? Over? Opinions? Thanks.

Under 1 MPH for sewed bait or it will roll and spin too much.  One thing I've been experimenting with more is sewed bait about 18 inches behind a dodger.  You can go a little faster and the bait takes the motion from the dodger and doesn't spin and roll out of control.

Soon the water will be warm enough that other methods/higher speeds are producing on par with the sewn on smelt game!

This rain we just got must have warmed the southern Maine lakes into the low/mid 40s from the upper 30s of last weekend already

Well, slow troll it is then. I'm going to try my hand at tandem streamer action this weekend on a couple rods. Might troll big jointed rapalas right under the chop

It depends on how one fishes sewn smelt. I've seen speeds from .9 to 1.4 mph. The slower speeds are used when making your smelt do a slow roll or a fairly fast spin. The faster speeds are used for when you make your smelt wobble, side to side motion without a spin,  like a lure.

I will add that I am partial to the smelt doing the wobble because it produces big fish the whole open water season.

Thats 0.84 or 1.352 Kilometers per hour. I  understand its hard for you 2 guys to understand whole numbers if you can't use your fingers or flash cards.

The Durty Lew Education, whole numbers do not have a fraction or decimal point. So in short if you round up,,,,, you were going a whole number of 1! Just riding you bro. Good luck
