Best reel grease/lube
« on: May 05, 2017, 06:28 PM »
What's everyone's go to reel lube? Looking for suggestions. I have mostly freshwater spinning and caring combos but some heavy duty salt round reels. I've heard good things about the quantum hot sauce but something is telling me the Penn grease would be better for my salt reels
Every fisherman is a liar. Except for me of course!

I've always used Penn for both salt and frest water reels.

Hot sauce is a very thin lubricant made for small baitcasters.  I would use a heavier lubricant for big saltwater reels.

I only use Break Free. It's all you need.

First, you will need both grease and oil. Grease goes on the gears and oil on everything else. Everyone's entitled to their opinion but for me Hot Sauce anything (grease or oil) is over priced and over-hyped.
For my money I still like the old cheapo ABU Garcia Silicote for grease. It hangs on in hot weather and doesn't get unnecessarily stiff in the cold. Plus it's clean and inexpensive. Break-Free is awesome! I tend to lighten it up by adding some ATF (automatic transmission fluid).

Competitive casters use ATF in combination with their pet oils, some use it straight but it's awful light and needs multiple applications just to get through a day of fishing. I mix 3:1 Break-Free to ATF. Really the ATF doesn't matter, any of the iterations will work as well as another. Marvel Mystery also works well in concert with the Break-Free. Don't forget that the BF is the perfect lube for any firearm.

Salt stuff should get a good fresh water rinse and appropriate re-lube after each trip unless you've got few days in a row. Once you're going to give it a rest, rinse and lube.

That's about 2 cents worth.....

Steady Freddy. Don't read into it more than is there.... Just sayin there is better for reels than sewing machine oil these days.

No indictment or belittling of previous methods.

I just use a White Lithium grease on the gears and then a few drops of a light weight oil like 3in1 on all the other moving parts.  The grease I kinda pack in heavy and put the cover back on and the oil just a few drops and wipe of the excess.
