Post by: boondox on Apr 03, 2015, 10:14 AM

This is one of my three boats, I'll have to take some pictures of the other two once I get them ready to go. Usually I have it set up with just a trolling motor for the smaller lakes. Started with a plain g3 12ft jon boat and added the seats, rod holders, and depth sounder, its a pretty comfortable rig for the smaller lakes.

where did you get the seats?
Title: Re: show us your rig!
Post by: NJChris on Apr 03, 2015, 06:15 PM
where did you get the seats?

I don't really remember. I know I brought them online, and the only places I really buy from online are sportsman's guide or cabelas, or maybe bass pro shops. It was one of those three places for sure, although I would guess all three sell seats and the mounting brackets. It was kind of a pain to get the brackets on cause the edges of the benches slope down a little, but its well worth it. It went from being uncomfortable in two or three hours without the seats to literally being able to comfortable fish as long as you want with them

My Dad brought this home brand new in 1969. When he passed away my siblings felt I should have it. My Dad and I did a lot of fishing in this boat. I added the seats, electronics and trolling motor. I rode her hard and put it away wet last year. Just put it into the garage today so I can get her ready for summer. She needs a little TLC and clean up. I am looking forward to those soft seats after a long season of sitting on a hard bucket!  :whistling:(https://www.myfishfinder.com/fishing_forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi1340.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fo731%2Fpastaboy86%2FIMG_2645_zpsfv1agxrw.jpg&hash=b393471387500b7b0d68f253767da776) (http://s1340.photobucket.com/user/pastaboy86/media/IMG_2645_zpsfv1agxrw.jpg.html)

Hey VC - how you been!!!!

Nice rig.
My Lund Rebel XL 1650 has a Merc 60hp 4-stroke and it will do 34-35mph on glass.
So yours is gonna talk to the almighty when you get her opened up.

Truth be told, I should have gone with at least the 75 or went the max to the 90.
After rigging the boat (adding weight), it's a pig getting out of the hole.

Good luck on that ride.
She looks good.

My toy. 1976 StarCraft, 16 foot hull with a 1978 Johnson 35 long shaft. Terrova 55 w/I-pilot, HB 798HDsi sonar. I mounted a pair of Riviera down riggers and I also made planer boards and a mast. Small old boat, but very versatile. That old Johnson will putt away for hours at 2-2.5 mph without complaint.

Nice rig!! I am alive !!! Lol. I looked at the Lunds but we're 10k more

oh yeah, Lunds were never cheap, but jeese, they've really ballooned in price the last few years.   My dad was looking at getting a brand new one, saw the cost and decided we'd go in on just a new outboard instead. 8)

Thats a really nice rig, I love Crestliner, great fit and finish on their boats.

It might not look like much, but when its fully rigged, I can troll up to eight lines at a time if I can get out into the open.

Here's mine, picked her up 2 days before I had to come back to work. Didn't even get to christen her with slime yet!!!
She's a 87 Grumman 17' . Custom Amish enclosure. 140 HP OMC.
Scouring CL for a kicker. Came with a bracket for a motor but not sure if I need a long/short shaft. Need to figure out how to connect main I/O to kicker. picking up a 80# Minn Kota bow mount with Ipilot and a Hummingbird  FF when I get back home.
my first real fishing rig!  New to I/O's so I'll be doing alot of reading. Thinking once I get her set up to my specs she'll be good to go.(https://www.myfishfinder.com/fishing_forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi1278.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fy517%2Fbigfish227%2FMobile%2520Uploads%2F20150513_094236_zpscczsuhkn.jpg&hash=c435d5899b048c9121054cbf9defce61) (http://s1278.photobucket.com/user/bigfish227/media/Mobile%20Uploads/20150513_094236_zpscczsuhkn.jpg.html)

Nice rig BI

I have used EZ Steers numerous times over the years to connect the main lower unit to the kicker.

http://www.amazon.com/Steer-Conn-kit-Alpha-Mercruiser-alpha/dp/B001O02Q6Q/ref=sr_1_7?ie=UTF8&qid=1432346062&sr=8-7&keywords=ez+steer (http://www.amazon.com/Steer-Conn-kit-Alpha-Mercruiser-alpha/dp/B001O02Q6Q/ref=sr_1_7?ie=UTF8&qid=1432346062&sr=8-7&keywords=ez+steer)

I have one for my Lund but don't use it.
I have the Terrova and iPilot.
I keep the kicker pointed straight ahead and use my iPilot to steer the boat while trolling.

Good luck on your new boat.

1985 20' Rinker  V205 with a 4 cylinder Iron Duke Mercruiser

I have been putting this together for over six years. Getting close but I don't think it ever really ends.

It trailers great and runs like a Swiss Watch. Lake Michigan Salmon and Trout are the main target, but the boat is small enough to easily launch in inland lakes as well.

ya my brother had a bay liner before his Carolina classic that really was the perfect boat just like your's don't ever go bigger cause the storage fee will kill you  that the whole reason he sold it was to get out from under it... cause he was paying storage fees and not using it cause his kids had other plans like foot ball dance etc.. you know the finer thing in life and a 9 grand storage bill is not worth it when your not using it...

but look like you got one of those perfect boats  not to big and not to small so how's the fishing up on crystal lk, over by frank fort  during ice season?  hear the smelt is good ?  one of te biggest salmon my dad ever caught was out of frank fort , MI on that bay liner my brother had that and I hear walleye and laker's in traverse  bay is awesome too ...   your really in a good spot up there in tc ....

Joe, thats a nice boat, but I think I see enough room to squeeze in some more rod holders on the port side, near the back. Time to place an order.

Seriously though, its a real beauty.

OK, I'll bite.  My new ride and the boat that I bought in 2012.  It's a 60/40 jet stick steer Alumaweld with an 80 lb. thrust trolling motor.

Nice.

How do you like the stick steer?
How hard is it to get used to?

I love it especially for navigating river chutes, ledges and rocks.  It's very responsive.  I had no problems getting used to it.  I had to replace the steering cable last year.  When it gets old, it tends to bind and get very tough to turn.  I guess it happens with steering wheels too, but from what I understand, it happens more frequently with stick.  Once I replaced it, I was cutting the boat all around the river!  :D

Jets tend to slide on turns (no skeg or prop to catch and hold the stern), and you can use that to your advantage to avoid rocks and such, but at the same time, you have to be careful and not go into a sharp turn too fast (like hot rodding up a narrow creek) or you might wind up putting the boat on a steep bank and cover the bow with mud, narrowly avoiding a rock cliff  :whistling:

very very nice boat I like the jet motor feature too... very big plus if you had to resell it most of us river fisher men salivate over them... is it a cable in a cable stick steer? if it is try greasing the cable with white grease early the stuff in the aerosol can... should help keep it moving I spray the end and work it in every trip out.. might pre vent premature cable failure hopefully...

Thanks boon...  Yes, it is a cable.  I got 4 years out of the last cable, the previous owner got about the same before that.

I can't really use my boat on big water unless I know that the winds are on the calm side.  But it is cool because I can get where other boats can't, very shallow draft on the drift too.  For where I live, I can pretty much fish just about anywhere.  I just have to be smart about where I launch on the larger bodies of water and avoid the really windy days there.  But there are enough smaller bodies of water and the upper rivers to find somewhere to fish!

Mac I prefer to use Imgur. My problem was it was labor intensive to figure out if I had already posted due to all the "third party hosting images have been temporarily disabled"  crap.

 Meet the princess Warrior..

this is an 18' 1978 Jon Dory yellow tail... I've owned her since 1980.. I've fished for every thing  available in New England .. but her main job..my passion.. is shallow water striped bass.. at night... not schoolies but trophies.. when I bought her she sported a 1977 80 HP Merc tiller handle ..no console. I retrofitted a center console from a 17' Mako... upgraded the tired old mill to a Merc. 90 6 cyl. inline "tower of power".. I fished her for  a few years  as she was but was dismayed how easily the transom could ship water it 2 guys were in the stern area...one morning on my way out tuna fishing ( yes I tuna fish from this rig) she "ate" a plastic bag ...lacking the over heat protection of modern outboards she locked up tight..after cooling down she eventually started and got me home.. but the engine was shot... putting an end to my season...
That winter... I took on a huge undertaking.. I cut up the floor and installed a 35 gallon Plastic fuel cell.. stiffened the hull with glassed in ribs.. added an anchor locker fore ship...I raised the transom to accept a 25" outboard..and installed a 1995 merc 115 ELPTO... I swapped out the mercury water sepperating fuel filter for a racor with a clear bowl that could be drained periodically... the cable steering was replaced with Bay star hydraulic steering... I added a Blue seas duel battery system  and wired a third battery for my trolling motor.. running # 2 cable all the way to the stern plug.. I added a wash down pump and onboard charger... a set of 10" Bennet trip tabs competed the build..she pretty much stayed that way until 2008 when I had to change engines when the flywheel magnets came unglued in the '95 115 ruining the stator ,trigger and of coarse the fly wheel ... the flywheel was no longer available and the only fix was to change the entire ignition system ( I had no faith in buying a used one)... it was cheaper to find a used motor... I installed a 2004 Merc 115 ELPTO ( same engine as the 95 ..just newer) I found it in an estate sale..low hours fresh water engine owned by a sight seeing Grandpa.. timing is everything!.. that winter I tore my MCL ice fishing .. standing was painful so I added a leaning post that spring.. in place of the 40 gallon oval bait tank...the electronics have constantly been changed and are going to be  upgraded again this spring.. I currently have a garmin mapping GPS  ( I don't remember the model)  and a Garmin fish finder that I hate ( again don't remember the model).. so I bought a Lowrance ( I've always run Lowrance the Garmin was a quick fix mid season purchase)..Hook2 9TS.. I cant wait to install it ( if it ever stops snowing).. also this season.. I'm adding a HT marine jack plate and a Power tech RBX4 propeller... the wide bow on this boat is great fro a dry ride.. but she always has had an issue with hull slap at speeds over 25 knots... I'll never buy a new boat. so this is my "new" boat fix  for the season... I'll post additional pictures when the upgrades are finished.. again.,,providing it EVER stops snowing..

I love that motor... it actually is very different than anything on the ,market.... it is an Oil injected in line 4..at speeds below 1800 or so ( throttle position depending) it only runs on the top 2 cylinders.. only the top 2 carburetors can be adjusted..the bottom 2 receive a minute amount of fuel for lubrication purposes( not enough for ignition)..  the unburned fuel is scavenged and burned by the top 2 cylinders.. an accelerator pump provide a squirt of gas to the bottom 2 cylinders upon acceleration .. and once the throttle plates begin to open air rushing past the 2nd progression hole runs the bottom 2 cylinders as they normally would... the engine/carburators are a bit tricky to get set properly.. it's a painstaking process that most people don't understand or want to spend the time to learn... I believe that is one of the reasons they  they have discontinues that engine and pursued fuel injection instead...but once you get it right... it will slow troll all day long.. jump on plane like it's turbo charged and pretty much sips gas at low. medium  speed..it came in 3 sizes...100...115 and 125.. it's a rugged engine... I'll, keep it until parts are no longer available or I croak!
