I have to build a few shrub protectors for the winter. Anyone have a preference between 1"x2" versus 1"x4" boards?

I do that when i can dacker. I should have mentioned some of the targets for the protection include Arborvitaes and Lilacs. the latter were grown from samplings and i can no longer get away with pallets. I figured while i had the table saw going i would also make a few for the 7' Arborvitaes at the corner of the house, that i need to be careful of when i rake my roof.

I could take the pallets apart and purpose them. Connect with a cross piece

No shrubs for me. One part of gardening I don't like much is trimming shrubs and hedges.

Marigolds are still going strong. Flower boxes and beds are dwindling. I'll pull it all after the first real frost. Haven't had one yet.

Had to cover the garlic bed with plastic netting. Something was digging around in it. Could have been the little skunk I caught in The Havahart trap last week. Had it set in the garden to get a chipmunk that was planting a flower seeds in all my beds. The skunk was a little guy. Body was about 10" long. I put a small tarp over the trap and moved him out into the back yard, opened the trap door and he ambled off.

I ended up getting the chippy the next day.

If you lend someone $20 and never see that person again, it was probably worth it.

I hear you Bob.
I hate pruning shrubs.
It always seems like 2-3 weeks after doing it they are needing it again.
And the cleanup afterwards....
 :-\

A few weeks back Donna and I pulled the shrubs from the garden in front of our home's front porch.
Long hard back breaking work to dig the roots on 2 of them.
I broke a tow strap using the SUV too.
Bought a larger one but still had to dig to China before the 2nd one gave up the fight.

Afterwards, we planted 6 hearty mums in there.
They look great and will never need pruning.

Next year the one on the other side of the front of the house gets a make over.
I'm thinking hosta!!!

 ;D

A local greenhouse near me is in the same situation RD. I picked up three 10" potted mums for $10.99 on Monday. Buy 1, get 2 free just to get rid of them before they close at the end of the month. They had some big, beautiful plants that were just starting to bloom so they should look good for at least a few weeks, I hope.
Do you think fish go home and lie about all the bait they stole?

Early to bed, early to rise
Fish all day and make up lies...

There's a reason they call it fishing, not catching.

Those are "Hardy" mums.

Good move. Well worth the effort. Hostas, plantains, cone flowers......any annual is good for me.
