When it gets worn out. Cracks in it, brittleness, loss of stretch/flexibility, color bleeding away, etc... Usually 4 or 5 years.

At today's prices they better last at least 5 years.
I've found that if you treat them gently, they will last a long time.

I was forced to replace my orvis fly line after 9 years, when I had to snap it out of a 30 foot tree!

I clean them with a mild solution of Dawn and warm water then treat them with Son of a Gun protectant. Seems to work very well....the last 10 years or so. I have lines well past 10 years old that are still very serviceable. I think proper storage in the off season is more important. Take them off the reels and store them loosely around a larger diameter spool. I use a Folgers plastic coffee can.

I have the new Sharkskin. Soap and water then ruff it up. I have 2 they replaced 1 for me after a year and a 1/2. The loop broke. Hope it will last 20 years.
