Stupid question about life vest...
« on: Jun 10, 2018, 03:05 PM »
I have a life vest I've had for years that uses a C02 cartridge to inflate by pulling a cord IIRR. Will the cartridge still be O.K. or should it be replaced?

I've never activated the cartridge as I've never had to.

Is this kind of vest passible for regulations in most states?

O.K. found my answer. Could still be good but they are so cheap...

Most are dated.  Law enforcement will ticket you if by chance they check you, it's expired, and you don't have another on board to cover your behind.  Yeah, they're not expensive and easy to replace.  I always fire my old one to make sure it works as designed before I replace the old one and there's always at least one more regular vest on board.

Just ensure you buy the correct rearming kit.  I have to go back because I bought the wrong one for my auto inflater!  Doh!

Thank you! Good to know!

You're welcome!  The size of the c02 cartridge was wrong when I went to replace.

You may already know this or it may not apply because you always wear it anyway, but in NH (and most other states I believe) a type V inflatable life preserver must be worn to count towards your quota of life preservers required on board. If it's stowed, even accessibly, and you do not have a type III also stowed on board for each crewmember you may get a violation.

What Jethro said is correct for NY and I believe the Coast Guard also.

I made sure to check.  We get coast guard visits out on long island sound and those guys stick to the book.

sorry, they are II's.

Type !'s are the best.

But I'm still good.

Here are NY laws on PFD's -

I as well bought an auto inflatable that is specifically marked type III rather than "type V with type 3 performance" but I am still doubtful I won't have an issue if I get checked. Around here they tend to make things more complicated and I wouldn't be surprised if they can find me in violation anyway, just because it's inflatable. NH Marine Patrol can be brutal.

If its type 3 you are good.  No one is more brutal than the coast guard and they had no issues with mine.  Even so Jefthro I feel your pain and do my best to avoid those situations.
