After my trip to Central NY early in the month, I also hit the road for a few days in NY's salt water. I intended to put time in with the flyrod on some salt water fish, but steady north winds made spinning a better choice.

There was a decent about of bait around, but it didn't draw the blues or stripers. Fortunately, there were plenty of wings and talons, plus a few fluke around to keep us busy.

With the traveling, I was only able to fit in a few trips in Maine. Flows were already too low for the most part. However, I was able to take advantage of a couple brief flow bumps at different times on 2 different watersheds to get in on some fast native brookie action on the 3-weight with dries.

It's early, but it almost seems like the high ground fish are coloring up for Fall ;D

Happy 4th to all and thanks for the comments. The trout and all of us could use a break in this weather!

Jim - another great report. What is that first fish you caught in the salt?? Looks like you traveled back in time and caught a dinosaur. Mike

Ah sea robins...no fun. Nice job on the fluke.

Cool post Jim, thanks for taking us along.

Love the pics. Thanks for sharing!

Thanks, Mike. As was said, the fish is a sea robin. They go by a variety of names, none too complimentary ;D There are lot of them and the wings help them give you a pretty good tug.

Interesting, never seen anything like it and I can definitely see why the nicknames may not be too complimentary. Really is amazing the breadth of species that exist. Thanks again for sharing!
