Water is cooling down a bit
« on: Aug 28, 2017, 02:43 PM »
and the fishing is heating up.  I just got back from a trip to a local river and the bass were were really on.  Most of the fish
were taken on zara pups and tiny torpedos.  I didn't fish them aggressively - just cast, let it sit a few seconds, a twitch or two
and then it was hang on Nellie.  On this stretch I usually catch a bunch of goggle eyes but the bass beat them to the punch.

fish on,

What was the water temp?

I was on a lake a couple of weeks ago and surface temp was 80 F. Then a week later it was 73 F. in the morning but got up to 75 F. by the afternoon.

I didn't take my thermometer.  I wet waded in sneakers and the water
felt cooler than the air which was 78 deg.

My biggest pond on the property is down to 64 F. from top to bottom. Of course smaller bodies of water cool down faster but I was surprised it was this low.

If the trout lakes cool down to about 68 or less the trout can come up for a breather if the oxygen levels are marginal.

Seems early to be this cool but it could also get warm again before fall sets in.

Oliver was only 67 at the surface by noon on Sunday. Started out around 62.
