Squirrel games are on! One of the little buggers figured out how to jump from the lilac tree to the post. So I put a plastic dome over it.
Then the clever little rodent figured how to jump from the ground to the seed catch tray.
So I installed some plexiglass strips that are loose and floppy. Can't wait to see what happens.

I have a lot of fun trying to outwit those furry buggers.
-
I like to outwit them also bob....right into the crockpot 😁😁👍
-
Well, I haven’t done in a living creature for quite a while……except for a sink ful of fish.
My Bride would be ….quite upset if I nailed one from the upstairs window.
So, I’ll just screw with them.
-
Lol ok! Yes ..stay out of trouble,!!!!
-
I do my best….doesn’t work though.

Tons of these over on yuotube
Do a search on “squirrel launcher”

Another style

Think I may have found my winter, post Christmas project.
Way back when my buddies and I would go up to Quebec fishing, we did chipmunk catapult challenges. The object was to launch them into the water from the cabin.
Many a beer were consumed launching chipmunks.
I think my Bride will be ok with launching squirrels in a harmless fashion.
-
No videos = it doesn't happen
-
Just your take bud.
-
Ok, you got my attention. Where did you fish in Quebec. I went to Mistisini until the price got out of reach.
No, we concentrated on monster fish and the Cree indians might have had questions about us Americans launching critters
-
Used to have a squirrel launcher made out of a clay pigeon thrower…. 8)
-
I took a red squirrel for a ride in my Jeep on Wed. My daughter saw it in the garage the other day and I live trapped it...h2l

You still that video footage?😁

No I wish I did… :-\

Senneterre mostly.
-
Well…I WIN ……round one at least.
My Bride told me the squirrel gave up at jumping from the lilac bush. The dome worked! So it tried jumping from the ground. Made it to the bottom of the tray and couldn't get around the plexiglas baffles.
Eventually it’ll get around to trying the other tray. So, I’m off to Lowes for another piece of plexiglass in a while.
Unfortunately I didn’t get to see any of the action. I went for a nice long walk this morning.

As a lineman we delt with squirels all the time when you were up on a pole working on lines. The had to visit you and chatter at you. They used lines as their expressway from pole to pole. We used our 9s (linemans pliers) to tap harder and harder on the lines until they ran away or back to a pole.
You all may be familier with power outage notice that states outage cause due to animal contact. Thats usually due to a squirel sitting on a transformer and coming in contact with the primary leg = they get toasted and typically blows the primary shotgun fuse that feeds that neighborhood
-
We have them all over the place in FL.
You can always see 3-4 running around the yards chasing each other.
I need to figure out how to keep them out of my boat. The cover won’t do it. It will actually attract them by giving them some cover.
I don’t need them nesting in it, chewing wires and upholstery all to hell.
Gotta figure out something.
No power in the storage compound either for an ultrasonic device.
-
Moth balls!
Have a plan for a remote controlled squirrel launcher. You’ll like this one…he he he!
-
Did you ever smell moth balls?
Never mind………old joke.
They don’t work Bob.
I used them in the past over the winter on my boats and twice it was ransacked by rodents from hell.
I just ordered two ultrasonic pest control devices from Amazon. The arrive Monday. Hopefully, the little bastards haven't already taken up home in my boat while we have been away.
I’ll toss in a box of mothballs too……..for good luck.

-
Problem with moth balls is collecting them.
Worked in my boat anyway.
Maybe the garlic I sent you will work.

I have a ton of respect for linemen. It’s a dangerous job…every day.
-
For sure bob, that crap scares the crap out of me ,not a fan of working with electricity!!!
-
Guys, when working with high voltages, its all about start safe / end safe.
-
I didn’t mind working with electricity. Still don’t. I worked on live 480 more times than I can remember. Also very high voltage ballasts and neon transformers. Never had an incident.
Mostly I worked alone while supervising multiple crews in other locations. That was fine by me. I could control the circumstances….at least my circumstances. Only had to be concerned with me screwing up. I was really organized and had a work pattern that…well….worked.
But line work is a different animal altogether. There’s been crews replacing poles in our area for the past few weeks.I watch those guys in the bucket and it makes the hair stand up on the back of my neck.
-
Have a prototype pretty much constructed. Got my trigger motor actuator and RF solenoid controller today. Should have a test flight by Friday, if I can finish my Christmas present list.
Busy little wood shop.
-
A man on a mission.
-
Good luck with the launcher. I can't wait to see it. As creative as you are, this will be fun.
-
Yes, videos please Bob.
Even from a cell phone if you don't have a gopro or something.
Thanks.

We have launch capabilities.
-
Tomorrow I’ll enclose the mechanics, mount the feed bowl and give it a test launch with a pound of bird seed in a bag. That’ll tell the tale.
Laughed like hell when I first fired it off.

You tube video won't play her bob says " private video" when I try to play

I don’t know Ben. They keep changing settings and I can’t keep up.
Very aggravating.

Yea
Same here.
Publish it here using the YouTube button above similar to when you post a web link. Push the first YouTube button and paste the url between the

That should do it.
-
Well, when I hit the link I posted it works. Don’t know about anyone else I guess.
Just trying to share.

Post the video like I explained.
YOU CAN DO IT!!!
😉

Still private.

Private here as well, Bob.
-
Same here
-
Haven’t done anything with it as yet.
Did a test launch with a 1.5 lb bag. It went about a foot and a half. Been consulting with my engineering staff ( aka two other old guys I know) I’m adding springs and possibly lengthening the launch arm. I’ll repost the first video to my other YouTube account.
-
Use one of the garage door springs.
That should send the little tree rat down my way someplace.
Lol
-
Design it to launch one of those tree rats at least 75 yards, with an elevation of 20 feet. My neighbor has a nice pond up the hill from me that will make a great landing strip for those gas tank chewing, feeder destroying, seed eating little demons. If I lived in the country, I could sit out here with my trap gun and a couple boxes of shells and have fun before they hit the water.
-
I’m waiting impatiently for the launch videos!!!😂
-
BB guns work too.
Just sayin.
;)

They do, but launching them into the next county is more satisfying. :thumbup_smilie:

It works, looking good....h2l
-
Yep works now!!
-
Hahaha that’s great.. Tighten the tension on the spring some more… ;)
-
Yep, video working. Great design. I love the actuator. A garage door spring and a 6' arm will send them into orbit.
-
Today the arm is going to be lengthened about 18” and I’m adding 2 more springs.
Crap, weather today so I have a big pot of sauce on the stove, I’m working on 3 different pet projects in the shop and am very happy to be retired!

Yeah…yeah…yeah…….
So this is the one bandit I’m looking to launch.

She’s the local matriarch and the one I’ve been battling. As of today, I’ve foiled her attempts to access the feeder trays. Had to add another piece of stove pipe to the feeder pole. She figured out that she could get 2/3 of the way up the wood pole and leap onto the tray from there.
Man V. Squirrel
-
They do make excellent stew Bob.
Just sayin.
-
Hunting squirrels was always my favorite. And yes, they do make good stew.
-
We always had them in pasta sauce ..
-
I liked reds better than greys, even though they are smaller.
Don't remember why.
-
We used to have a squirrel hunt contest. A bunch of us would get together and head out. Greys were 1 point, reds were 3 points.
-
I like canning the back half of them. Canning them will make even the toughest squirrel tender Tried bone in, bit boning them out is the way to go ( too many small bones to deal with). My grandson and I love squirrel and gravy on toast.

Not aa much fun as a launcher, but I hadn't seen this strategy before.

Yeah, I’ve seen that one. Fun!
-
The launcher is on hold for the moment. I’m into another project for a bit.
-
they are a pain I Tried a 3in dia pvc pipe over i my wood feeder post
didn't stop it. , it could leap on pvc and still climb up pipe
but I got it now I added a squirrel baffle between feeder and post :P ::)

Didn't work for me . The d**n things just climbed up inside the Slinkey
-
You have smart squirrels, lmao

Here’s all the armament I’ve applied to my feeders and trays..

It’s stopped all but one male. He just jumps on the trays from the ground.
When I get my beautiful Bride home from the hospital, I’m going back to work on the launcher.
-
Get a few of these to move into the area.
While I was making bfast this morning, Donna went out and took a few photos of one of the two hawks we have nesting in the tree.
They squawk like crazy when Macy is out on her leash.
We are very careful never to leave her alone when she is out there.
The resident squirrel population has taken a serious nosedive since these two came back again this year to mate and nest.

We have a few resident hawks in our area. There’s a bunch of walnut and butternut trees so the squirrels have lots of food. But they do like an easy meal. All but one stays on the ground.
-
I had to put the launcher on the very back burner. My Bride objects….strenuously!
I popped one feeder bandit with the pellet gun. Thought I just gave it a little sting, but, hit it pretty hard. It’s still around, but, it Didn’t go over well.
Maybe next winter.
-
Timing, and discretion, is everything in life Bob.
Have fun with the tree rats when she’s out having her hair done or something.
;)
-
Doesn’t work that way here Mac. After 53 years……she’s pretty aware.
And, I’m good with keeping her happy.
-
I put up plastic pipe, the over wood post but that smart ask squirrel still climbed
up pipe so I installed a squirrel metal baffle under feeder ,
he now is a bottom feeder LOL
-
We need to hear more about the squirrel launchers just lookin for a little entertainment! :clapping: :clapping:
-
First priority for the wood shop is finishing the launcher. Think I’ve got my Bride on board. Anyway, it’s gonna get done.

Little bugger was eyeballing the feeders as we were watching out the window eating breakfast. She said “we have to do something about that squirrel”
Bingo!
-
Launchers won’t get rid of them.
Just provide some entertainment.
Get a bb gun
-
Nope…that’s off limits.
-
If a launcher keeps them away great...if not you get to launch it again...also great.

I just bought my first bag of seed but haven’t put any out. Besides the raccoons are still out..
-
My full arsenal of bird feeders is out. Joined the “bird seed club” at our local Countrymax. The $34.99 50 lb bag of black oil seed cost me $21.99.
Bought meal worms at Tractor Supply (chicken feed) less than Half the cost of Lowes or Walmart.
My Bride loves to watch the birds feed as she sits at the kitchen table….
So do I.
