New news yesterday at Cayuga Lake the service was there taking some measures to decrease the population of the newsnet cormorants that are decreasing the perch population and killing the trees on Frontenac Island.
Glad something is being done.
ALL IN FAVOR, reply in Me kill'em all

Yea
Kill them all

Yes they need to be controlled!

Screw the cormorants……..eliminate the geese. Crap spewing feathered rodents in my book.
Well, I “work” on a golf course. Chased 30 of them of the green by the clubhouse this morning so I could mow. Goose crap everywhere. US Fish and Wildlife is scheduled to do a roundup in a few weeks. Nothing makes me happier than to think of them passing through the sausage grinder……and feeding someone in need.

cormorants are a native animal and play a part of the eco system ........ local geese are a us wildlife experiment that went wrong and should be corrected .......... mute swans are a invasive animal that kills native water fowl and should be destroyed

For a guy who couldnt wait to get out of NY, has done nothing but blast NY since you left, you sure do have an awful lot to say about what happens in NY. Embrace your crappy state of Florida. We see youre fishing about as much as you did in NY, which is never. The Florida page could use your drivel.

Bad day?
I fish enough.
And I'll be back up there in NY fishing soon.
I hope your day gets better.

My day is great thanks for asking.
I said what I said.
Florida's forums are calling you.

Who the heck said cormorants are native? To my knowledge they are not native, they were interduce to north America and are an invasive species.
Maybe we should do a fact check?

They are, cormorant's, good for nothing.

Ask the guys planting T&S fingerlings every spring about cormorants.
Anyway, here's a good article I found.
Trap is correct it appears. They are native birds according to this article. (Sorry Rusty)

Never saw one before the 80s

Call em what you want. I don't like em

Never saw one before the 80s
I never saw a Great Blue Heron or Bald Eagle before the 80's either. I wonder if DDT had something to do with it?

Likewise and he has always helped answer any questions I have. Very knowledgable guy. The only thing I recall Mac badmouthing is ice fishing! He hates the cold!

Back to the cormorants: A biologist on Lake Huron in the Alpena, Michigan area told me years back they only got a 1/10 of one percent return on planted brown trout thanks to the cormorants that immediately go on the attack after they are planted. And they can eat a hell of a lot of fish. See photo. An island they were nesting on in Thunder Bay (near Alpena not the one in Canada) was like a dead zone due to their feces killing off all plant life.
They may be native and they may be part of the ecosystem, but apparently they don't have the natural predators they need to have to keep their numbers in check. A repeated theme when it comes to our interference with nature.

Back in 2020, Ontario Canada opened a cormorant season between Sept and the end of the year (roughly).
It allows you to shoot and kill 15 a day per person.
I know a lot of guys out there aren’t fond of Canada. I like fishing up there.
And they recognized the problem and took action.
As far as I’m concerned…..
Kill them!
-
Ya know ticks are part of the natural ecosystem too but...

The swans can be brutal! They are very territorial. We had a situation in my area on one of the lakes regarding them. Half the lake people loved them and half of them hated them as they were attacking their kids and anyone that would get remotely close. Anyway our DNR came in one night and shot them. Of course half of the lake people were ecstatic and half of them very livid. LOL
I was fishing a small lake where every time a Canadian goose tried to join its mate on a nest a Swan came out and attacked it. Must have also had a nest close by.
-
mute swans are from china and will attack and kill native water fowl
-
Thanks, Mac, for the fact check. As far as I care they are not native bird species of north America.
Should be keep in check just like we do with other wildlife.
We do it with fish, deer, and waterfowl regulations and management to keep them from over populating., to control are ecosystems.
So, let's get some regulation and management on them or they are going to destroy the fishing in waterways and foliage on what Islands they nest on.
hinkydo Fish on and shoot some cormorants
-
It’s foolish to think we can control Mother Nature to our own ends. Never happen! We keep meddling and in my opinion we exacerbate most of with we think are problems.

We are all being dated by that commercial!
I looked it up. 52 years ago! 1971!

Yup! I remember it well.
Oh well.
-
In the long run what use are they, cormorants?
They still have to be managed or I feel the fish we enjoy catching and eat are going to decrease.
Where do we go from there?
We still have to do something because that's what we do.
hinkydo Fish ON at least for a while longer

Yup! Now that we have changed the balance and removed a lot of the natural predators we have to manage the system.
I wad reading somewhere that at one time cougars were so common in North American they were everywhere. So many in fact that there are a lot of subspecies.
-
I read someplace that there are more whitetail deer today than back when the pilgrims were around. Not sure how they know this. Who counted them back in the 1500-1600’s and what was the procedure? ;)
-
Back in them days I'm sure there was a lot of mature forest which does not provide the white tail with great nutrition especially in the winter months . Also remember that back then there were REAL winters. Heck our lakes don't even freeze any more.
-
I have seen herons since I was a kid in elementary school and a few eagles as well
-
increase in agriculture....the elemination of natural prediters (wolves) modern wildlife management ....... all these things increased the population of deer,,,,theres alot more deer now then there was when i was a child
-

You say that like it’s a bad thing.

Although I don't like what the cormorants have done to Ibay, they are protected and would like to see less of them if the DEC so decides to do that.
To chime in on the whitetail thing, in 1900 there were 0 deer in New York. Yup, 0. In the '20"s the first re-sighting of the current population was in Naples, NY. People have a real hard time rapping their heads around the fact that NY and a very large portion of The surrounding NE was clear cut. Again, yup, no mature forests. Very few swaths survived and indigenous species along with that. Don't even get me going on cougars in NY. Sucks what we used to do to nature and the price it payed.
I did have a rare sighting of an indigenous species years ago......................Mac ice fishing in NY. ;) ::)

Hi buddy!
How ya been?
I heard you had rough go of it a while back. I hope you’re better. A lot better!!
The Stetson still fit your fat head? Lol

Cormorants seem to be everywhere there are abundant fish these days. Near the mouth of the Oswego river I sometimes watch them fishing, they are very efficient. From what I see they are mostly catching gobies in the river. Towards dark you see flocks of them flying upriver.

When I lived in Massachusetts as a kid from about 1967 to 1971 I never saw a deer there. I'm sure they were around but never saw one. Also never saw a turkey. And never saw a tick or heard of one. We lived on a military post and the military loved DDT for mosquito control. They would drop it via C-130's all over the post. Maybe why no ticks? I remember fishing when a C-130 did a drop and there were bugs on the surface of the water everywhere and the fish went nuts.

He's one of the few.
There's a few guys on here who have.
Jerry, Greg, my son Jeff, Rich
Years ago I ice fished all the time.
The neuropathy simply made it far too painful.
Another reason moving down here to FL was a good move for me.

The good ol dec is themselves responsible for a few endangered species such as blowing up timber rattler dens so bluestone quarries could be opened purely for money

I do not think the lack of predator argument really applies here. What eats adult cormorants? Bald eagles, great horned owls, and coyotes are the top predators of adults and raccoons (mainly) eat the chicks/eggs. Not sure about where everybody else lives, but here in CT/MA there are more bald eagles, coyotes, and raccoons then ever. Not sure about great horned owls. I hate cormorants as well, but what predator would we like to see more of to control the population?
-
We don't see anything going after them out here in the Great Lakes.
-
Not sure what rough time your referring to Mac. Things are just fine here with me and mine. The Stetson fits just like the first time I put it on as well, just fine. ;)

I was drinking with my BIL.
It was Larry that had the troubles.
Sorry bud!!
Hey - at least I got the Stetson correct. Lol
