Use a 6'' Magnum powergrub rigged texposed with no weight for about the same deal. You can trim the body down to suit your preference.  The tail is huge and that is all I am after. I often only leave enough body to seat the hook in. I have had a hard time finding these in recent years but don't substitute with saltwater grubs. The salt water grubs have a denser plastic and a stiffer tail, they sink too fast and don't have the same action. The blunt end of the grub can also be used as a popper if you get creative with a knife and a lighter. The tail on these grubs is huge and very active with the slightest twitch of the rod. I like a nice stiff 7' rod with superbraid and a baitcaster to fish this. This method is only productive in shallow water or in very heavy cover. Don't go overboard with a giant 4X hook or you will sink it.

A word of warning...

One pike equals one grub. The toothies tear these up like nothing else. I have caught a ton of fish doing this, including some very large early season pike. The bass love them even more.

A bad day fishing and drinking beer is better than a good day at work.
