Trapper,
When I come up next week we'll have to do some fly trading. We better bring some extra for the KP crew ;D

I'll have some furled leaders for y'all to enjoy. Best thing since...............peanut butter. You won't believe how well they cast.

Just made 5 furled leaders out of 12lb. mono, they turned out pretty nice, it's amazing what you can learn on you tube :)

12lb...should be good for Marlin ;D
Furled Mono leaders are good for certain situations. They sink quite nicely.

Take a look here Furled Leaders for twining instructions.

Beginner fly fishers or fly tiers?

This is an article I go back to time and time again.
https://www.msu.edu/~connert/carpfly.htm

Some great basic information for carp on the fly.

Here's a great site that I visit often to brush up and find pattern ideas.
Flyanglersonline

Kit or......?

Kits are Ok, but you'll outgrow it quickly if you have any interest at all.

The basic necessities are (in my opinion)
Vise:
Buy a Danvise!

Best you can buy for around $80
I use one all the time.

Scissors;

You need good scissors. This set is around $35 at LLbean I use them.

Whip finisher:

I like a Materelli style. $6 or so

Bobbin(s);
Buy what you like. I think I have one of everything and I always go back to the inexpensive "made in India" bobbins I bought 30 years ago for practically nothing.

Bodkin; The all purpose tool. It's nice if they're brass handled with a half hitch tool on the butt end.

With those tools and some basic materials you can start tying your own.

I've been toying around with buying a Dynaking Squire  for certain flies that like a bit more room around the vise to work. Anyone ever use one?

Looks to be a top quality product.

A friend of mine joined me today for some warm water fly fishing. He's a terrific fisherman,,,a goll darned fish magnet. He's the son of my fishing mentor, "The Old Man".

He took to the fly with gusto. A short casting lesson and he looked like a pro.

I can't tell you how satisfying it is to start another  fly fishing. He had fun! We had fun!

Pass it along....pay it forward. It's a pure pursuit.
