Sounds like a good alternative.
If you lend someone $20 and never see that person again, it was probably worth it.

Got a few yesterday : was  a great day with slight breeze so I made for the lake. I struggled finding fish and then found a batch in 10-14 FOW.  There were many fish but few willing to come up to the surface. I switched to a sinking nymph bit still it was very slow waiting for that fly to sink far enough to get to where they would respond. Maybe the bright sun ?  What should I have done ?  Was thinking of looking for another Pluegar 1494DA so I could rob the spool and put on a sinking line for such times. Maybe someone has one they would like to sell ?  All in all it was a fun day, great weather.

would any one know the difference between these reels :    Pfluegar  1494DA   &   1494 1/2       will the spools interchange ?

No the 1/2 is a wider spool than the Da.

For the price you could do much better. I’d save a few bucks and buy a Red Truck Deisel. Last you a lifetime. Mine has….so far.

Just a tank of a click and  pawl reel with a reasonable drag system. Pretty much bomb proof. Not a skeleton reel by any means. Just really well built.

I’m partial to Ross Reels, expensive, but they look like a piece of art, especially the colorados and new evolutions.

Im lucky in that when I worked at gander I got 60% off Ross and Scientific Angler. Basically paid $200 for a $400 Ross Evolution LT reel and $100 SA textured line. There’s no way I could afford that set up now haha.

For under $150 It’s hard to beat an Orvis Battenkill, Lamson Liquid, or even a Cheeky Pre-Load if you want one that already comes with line. I just started using the Cheeky and so far it’s great for a die cast.

Reels are mostly just line holders for us as we don’t catch big enough fish  ;D

Tried this morning. Caught some , but the cottonwoods are in full bloom. Gave up and worked on the gardens.

This one was the ticket today.

Gonna have to try some other color combinations on this pattern. It’s a keeper.
