Depends on the reel seat. Might have to custom make one to fit. I only have one on my heavy carp rod. Hard maple turned on my lathe.
If you lend someone $20 and never see that person again, it was probably worth it.

Rod builders can you add a butt extension to a fly rod, and is it easy

It’s definitely possible but the level of difficulty lies in the reel seat and amount of epoxy used for the cap.

You take off the butt cap, splice in another section of rod to your desired length, then add cork/Eva (whatever your preference is) to hide the splice and give it a fighting butt/Spey rod look.

That said, I don’t have much experience and there’s far better builders out there so others might have a different approach. I’ve only built around 18 rods (8 bass, 3 trout, 4 ice, 2 fly and currently have another fly rod on the wrapper with 2 more bass rods in queue).

If you need something custom I’d be glad to make it for you.

No charge to fellow fly fishers.

Well, this morning I broke out my 9’6” Pfleuger Medalist 5 wt. it’s one of only two store bought fly rods I own.  Bought  it at Dick’s in Syracuse in the early 80’s. It was in a bargain barrel and I paid $19 for it. It’s an IM 6  blank. A bit on the heavy side compared to some of my others but it’s a super easy casting rod. I re-wrapped it a number of years ago, back when I was building rods. Can’t imagine how many fish have been caught on it. I think it’s my oldest rod.

It was pretty windy this morning out of the West. I tried my usual spot but quickly donated a fly to into the unknown. Decided it was too tight for that long rod. So I headed to the lock and wide open spaces. Tied on a Thunder Creek in olive and white. Lo and behold I started catching crappie. Ended up somewhere around 20 or so. Only a few were real keepers. Most were around 8” or so. All survived to bite another day.

A great start to a fun project. We’ll see what tomorrow brings.

Well I don’t wade the streams too much any more. My knees don’t like it. They’re getting old I guess. Never really was a trout fisher anyway. Mostly went looking for smallmouth.

Yeah, I’ll be thinking about it while I’m mowing tees in the rain tomorrow morning. A day to love my rain suit.
