Title: NYC DEP Reservoirs
Post by: jager61 on Apr 19, 2015, 04:15 PM
What's up Reservoir Dogs! Time for another annual installment of Fun on The Reservoirs! Probably the only good thing to ever come out of NYC! Started the season Monday and finished off the first week with a few nice Browns trolling lead core. Waiting for the water to warm up a bit more before the open water Laker jigging mayhem begins! Enjoy the pics!

Couple nice mounts of two bookend 11lb Browns I recently got back from last year. Mounts were done by Mike "Swags" Swagemaker!

:thumbup_smilie: Those mounts are real nice jager61.
Tough 3 hour troll/cast for me on Pepacton mid-day today.{ 1 small brown) Snowing ,blowing with gusty whiteouts.....but just being out there is good therapy for me.

Thanks Dom and ChooChoo! Not a nice day today to be gettin your butt kicked in a rowboat. Good to see you were successful from shore however! Casting can be VERY productive! Got the next three days off and am planning to hit some of the local Ressies with Leadcore in hand! Just placed a giant order with the Sutton company to stockpile the spoon inventory! Their supplies are running very low and had to settle on alternate sizes but they did have #71's which are my favorite for yankin lead for lakers up in the ADKs!

Continued good luck!  :D

Good luck fishing the next few days jager61...hope the weather cooperates for you.
Mother nature dictates what direction you can row and how long you can troll many days on the big ressies. No sense pushing it on rough days... A guy can feel quite small out there on a 20 mile long lake in a little 12 foot rowboat with a pair of oars for a motor with no one else in sight. :D
.....but love the feeling when I get out there and I'm sure glad they let us fish on them.

Got a pair this AM, 5lb & 6lb trolling 2 colors with Plazma spoons in 30 FOW. Wind was tough in the rowboat this morning and had to break out the Ice parka! Lol!

Hey guys. I'm planning on taking the boat out first time this season on Wednesday up at Rondout for some laker trolling action (maybe some browns too.) I'll be using dipsy divers, possible some flat lining depending on the depth of the fish. Overall, where depth wise do you guys think would be a good starting point? I've heard reports of a lot of lakers being caught deep, but also some being caught near the sirface. I know they're pretty spread out this time of year, just looking for any advice I can get. Thanks!
Title: Re: NYC DEP Reservoirs 2015
Post by: jager61 on Apr 27, 2015, 09:18 PM
Gino, the lakers are indeed quite deep and are on the schools of Sawbellies, up to 130 feet down. I would either vertically jig with 2oz crippled herrings and walk the bottom while slowly drifting or drop bait down to the bottom. Some decent lakers are being caught with live bait right now!

Hope that helps & good luck!
Mike

Hit the pepacton from shore last week wanted to check boat out..stayed and fished an hour w crocs and bait, water was pretty murky, not a hit. So figured id give it a bit, anybody else having any luck there yet

Spent 3 hours casting from shore at Pepacton last Thursday. Not even a follow up. It looks like there is pretty good die-off of sawbellies this spring and they were circling on the surface and all over the shore. Birds were feasting and the fish too so it may be there is so much easy food around they don't even bother chasing a spoon. Hope to hit it again from the boat once the wind dies down.

Nice Double tonight, a 7lb and 8lb and had them both on at the same time!  They hit about 30 seconds apart and all I could do was flip off the baitfeeder lever on rod #2 and let the drag of the reel fight the fish while I dealt with fish #1.  Of course I was alone this time just to make it more interesting!   Can't believe I landed both, LOL! Kept them both and they are going on the BBQ grill this Friday to go along with marinated backstrap fro last year's deer! Yum!  :D

Hi Jim, great hearing from you and thank you for the kind words! How's the hip? I hope it's as good as my two hinges! Saddens me to hear about Otsego. I hope at least you have other opportunities elsewhere. What about some of the Catskill DEP reservoirs? They wouldn't be that far of a hike from you? Anyway, hope all else is going well and say hi to Ryan 9 Fingers and Pig Roast Paul !  :D

Thanks Gino! Glad to see you're adding LC to your fishing arsenal! LC is a VERY productive technique for the reservoir trout. It does present a few unique challenges out of a rowboat but on the other hand, you can also do things that are not possible in a motored boat which makes it such an effective method of trolling. PM me if you need any help with set up or some ideas on LC trolling techniques for the reservoirs!

Good luck!

FANTASTIC photos, guys!!!   Especially yours, Slap!!!

Makes me miss those reservoirs on summer evenings.  I used to live right over the hill from the Rondout and Neversink (Claryville) and spent a whole lotta' evening pounding BIG smallies from Cooney's Point.

Those fish used to HAMMER topwaters at sunset.   Like they wanted to smash the lure into pieces.

What a place...  I never spent much time chasing the trout in the rowboat (only shore fished 'em in the Spring), but those sure are some beauties!

(I remember convincing myself that I was catching big Landlockers when I first discovered those Seaforellen Browns...  I assumed they came out the discharge pipe from the Neversink, but it didn't take long for my neighbors to correct me and let me know those are, in fact, Brown Trout, haha...   Never did get a darn Landlocker out of the Neversink, and man alive did I try....)

AWESOME STUFF, GUYS!

Hi Jim, good hearing from you! I trust the hip is well! Guess who needs a new right shoulder? Lol! By time I'm 70 I'll be a robot! Haha!

Have you looked at what people are bidding these days on eBay for Suttons? It's insane! Glad I got my bulk supply back when I got into yanking lead with #71's ! Heading up to camp this weekend to do just that! (While the shoulder still moves!) lol!

Man, Mike, the Bionic Trout Whisperer! I am doing well as far as the hip, never a problem. I did have hand surgery yesterday to remove a bone spur on a knuckle. No big deal there, didn't even feel it. They take off the splint tomorrow (officially, I already removed it temporarily, stitches are driving me crazy already) should be good to go. Realistically, it was more trouble than it was worth, but easier now than when I develop a permanent"trigger finger".
Maybe even hit the lake sometime this week if it stops raining, I hope.

Nice guy!  Question are you guys running that 832 advanced leadcore?

Yes, I've been using it for 3 seasons now. It's a little pricey but the thinner diameter allows for the use of smaller more lightweight reels.

Went 5 fish for 8 hits on Lakers this AM trolling lead and heavy Suttons, best was 6lbs. Fish were very active from daybreak until 8 am then everything shut down and I was just exercising! LOL!

I know that Cannonsville Res allows kayaking and I believe Pepacton does too but I'm not 100% on that. If you check the NYC DEP website I'm sure it will advise. I think they allow electric troll motors too!

Here's everything you need to know about accessing the reservoirs for fishing and with a boat. http://www.nyc.gov/html/dep/html/recreation/faq.shtml#a10 (http://www.nyc.gov/html/dep/html/recreation/faq.shtml#a10)

KAYAKS,Allowed  powerwashed and given a 5 day permit.
Electric trollers allowed at cannonsville but, need to be power washed and stickered.
must be left at boat.
Id luv to put my Yak on the dams,I can just imagine what a 10 lb brown would do.
Pull you up and down the dam like a BOOBBER.LOL.
I hooked a bass maybe 20" sunday nite on a lake ,near the spill way. That bass tried everything in its power to get me over the spillway,,,i swear.lol.

What's the word on Cannonsville? Are they going to drain it down all the way?
Title: Re: NYC DEP Reservoirs 2015
Post by: choo choo on Jul 21, 2015, 03:12 PM
Yes.....(well not quite all the way....down to 3% of capacity, if need be)
The " code orange alert" is off Cannonsville ... but they are currently draining the 95 billion gallon reservoir down at a rate of about 10" inches a day,at a max. 1500 cfs (not sure of how many gallons a day that is) until the reservoir is at 3 per cent of capacity. Further inspections and repairs , or a new concrete dam, instead of earthen, will be decided at that time after inspections and hydrologists reports etc..
The aquifer they hit while drilling for their hydro electric project is only 61 feet down on the earthen dam area.....scary stuff.
Title: Re: NYC DEP Reservoirs 2015
Post by: choo choo on Jul 21, 2015, 04:43 PM
I just talked with a neighbor who was at a recent Cannonsville situation meeting. He said that the DEP Hydrologists and engineers said they will only drain the level of the reservoir down to a point that they can make repairs. They said they had no idea how far down that would be...75%, 50% 20% or down to 3% if a new dam is the final answer. They are pretty sure they will be able to isolate and fix the problems with the current earthen dam and aquifer below it, without draining the reservoir down all the way...time will tell.
For now it's draining at 1500 cfs down the West Branch, and also releasing down the tunnel to the Rondout too.

DEP is supposed to be updating their Website frequently about the situation at Cannonsville.(Not sure but might be nyc.gov cannonsville watershed)

Beautiful Smallies Chez, congrats! Those are a ton of fun to fight and good Eatin' !! Awesome colors on those fish too!!

I was up in the ADKS on Fourth Lake on Saturday. Conditions were very rough making the Downriggers difficult to control so we went old school and yanked lead core with spoons letting the wind just drift us! My buddy got his first laker, he was thrilled!

Continued success!

Nice job guys!  No jigging on fourth Mike?  I have been making use of a drift sock this year.  What a helpful tool for days hat are too windy!

It was so windy, not just gusts but sustained 20 mph wind that it was impossible to hold bottom even with a drift sock. The only thing that helped was keeping the bow mounted troll motor on full thrust into the wind which kept the speed at around 1 mph so we could put the lead on bottom but it was marginal at best. But, despite the the conditions will still lucked into a few but it was likely more of an accident than anything. Wish I had my copper wire rigs, that would've really helped! I agree with you on the sock, it's an awesome tool for the arsenal! Speed control is so important with lakers especially when they're deep!

Hi chez.... Well they said the problem is fixed.
They called in the experts and they decided to drill additional holes, to relieve the pressure from the problem hole where the water was gushing up. The additional holes were drilled way below the problem hole, and it apparently worked. Then they pumped in (and I think they are still pumping in) some special grout to seal the problem hole, and the water is no longer gushing up which had put the dam area in jeopardy.

The current release is now down to 500 cfs, and will remain there through the rest of summer. Luckily, there is enough cold water still stored in the reservoir to do this. Cannonsville level should still continue to drop a little, because only 300 cfs is coming in. But if we get a bunch of rain , the reservoir level can start going up again...all depends on mother nature.

I hope their grout fix holds and things can get back to normal above and below the big dam.

Still not sure if they are going ahead with their hydro electric project....but most people seem to think they are.

Good luck and good fishing to you chez .  (btw, the west branch and main stem wild trout fishing has been phenominal the last few weeks)

Chez, Roundout is a fantastic reservoir, loaded with Lakers and Smallies and also has a good Brown fishery with some monsters caught each season! In mid July and friend and I went for the day to jig for Lakers.  We caught close to 20 fish that day including a nice 13.5lb'r!  A great source for info on The Roundout is the Hudson Valley Sportsman, http://www.hudsonvalleysportsman.com/index.php?action=forum
You'll find a great group of guys and there is a lengthy thread on The Roundout as well as several other of the West of the Hudson DEP waters.  I think you'll find the site very interesting!

I finally had a successful day trolling!!!! 3 for 3 on hits today! 19" smallmouth, 20" brown, and another smaller 14" brown. The bass was at 8 colors, both trout at 6. Was using Stingers. Also caught 2 smallmouth casting, and my father caught a smallmouth and a rock bass. Beautiful & successful day out. I try to release all the fish I get, but unfortunately the bigger brown was hooked bad and I had to keep him.

Thanks for the kind words guys! Actually, that is indeed a Brown trout. When I took the picture was after it died, and it lost a lot of its color. When I caught it it was a lot darker, and I easily identified it as a brown.

What's up JoJo!! Nice to see you made your way to MFF and found the DEP thread! It's that favorite time of year! :-)
Got out today to troll a bit, nothing heavy, mainly to see if my new shoulder and arm can tolerate the rowing. Looking good, I was out there from 10a-4p! Picked up one chunky SMB with really pretty coloration! That was really difficult to say because as you know JoJo, they're cucumbers with fins!  Lol!!
Got a dozen leftover baby suckers from last weekend up in the Adks and am going to fish The Big K tomorrow! Woooooooo!

Good luck to everyone venturing out on the reservoirs this season! :-)

I don't see why not , they do on the ice prior to the 1st. Maybe someone else can chime in with confirmation of that though

Might be better to wait until April 1st to target trout there with spoons unless you were catch and release fishing for bass.

Well what would be the difference between catch & release for Bass or Trout being that they are both out of season? I throw every trout back either way, in season or out. I caught the brown on the minnow accidently while fishing for Crappie....

There is an established catch and release season for bass and not for trout in most parts of NY.

I must say, I am quite lucky to have all of these East of the Hudson reservoirs practically in my back yard. Some are as close as 5 minutes away. The West of the Hudson waters are also spectacular fisheries. But, for whatever reason, are not open year 'round and we have to wait until April 1st to get on them. There is also no ice fishing permitted on these waters which is not necessarily a bad thing.  The entire DEP reservoir system is a true gem however. The only good thing to ever come out of the ugly city!  ;D

You're on fire Jager!  I got a nice 5 lb Brown on CF yesterday morning when the winds weren't as calm as I'd thought they would be.  Looks like it's going to be a great season!!

Thank you for the kind words! I just show you guys the good stuff! Lots of skunk days mixed in between!!

Hit the lower basin of the Ashokan on Friday.  Walked and casted a lot of shoreline in 2 hours and got 3 smallies and one 17" brown.  Water is very low for this time of year :-\    Stopped at the weir first to see what was happening.  Lots of guys as usual for opening day but didn't sound like much action from the couple guys I talked to.  Too windy for boats by late morning as the wind was cranking.

Hey guys. Went to Cannonsville after work tonight for a few hours of shoreline fishing. Landed a nice fat Brown about 21". It had a blue zip tie through it's dorsel fin. A regular Home Depot zip tie....Not a DEC or NYC tag of any sort. Any thoughts? I turned him free and left it there as it did not seam to be hindering the fish

Got out there before daylight this AM to try and get ahead of the wind that's been hammering us lately. Water was dead flat calm until 8:30 am and then the wind switch was flipped on and just like that, got my one and only hit of the morning!! :D

It's certainly beginning to look that way! However, all the browns on my profile page were caught in 2012 so it'll will be fun to try to top that! The laker was from LG but there are fish like that in our reservoirs too, just more difficult to reach with conventional row boat gear! Thanks for the nice words!

Jon, I've been back and forth with Northerns and Walleye over the years but the walleye just don't excite me the way the trout do for whatever reason. I will admit however that I have a renewed interest in Pike since I've been tagging along with Jay (FishinNY) and Ryan (Deadsmelthead). Those guys are big pike slayers and are on a whole different  focal plane when it comes to catching big ones. But, truth be told, big ugly lakers are my favorite not that I catch many but the hope is always there and it keeps me coming back! Also, I'm afraid to get involved with the Stripers since they peak around the same time as the good part of reservoir trout season. I know what will happen if I catch a big river striper so I keep away (for now) lol!
There's just so many fish to focus on and so little time! :-)

All the best Bro!

I just caught a nice 19" fat brown on Saturday in Cannonsville that also had a zip tie through its dorsal fin. the color of the tie was black. i was wondering about this myself. Anyone know why? Is it because someone wants to mark the fish they are catching to see if they catch the same one again?

Years ago, when I was a kid back in the 70's living in Mass I remember reading about those reservoirs like Pepacton (sp?) and their big brown trout in one of the big three outdoor mags at the time -- either Field & Stream, Sports Afield, or Outdoor Life. I don't know if one particular article was exaggerating, but it said that there were large brown trout nailing the newly stocked trout as they were planted.

Wow beautiful monster browns. Keep those pictures coming!

I'm guessing those reservoirs are chalk full of alewives? They look like they have a great coldwater forage base vs. lakes with only invertebrates and zooplankton to feed on.

Thanks for the kind words! :-)
We have been getting the majority of these Browns drifting live Sawbellies (Alewives) anywhere from 16' (early season) to 30' down suspended over 40-60 FOW. We always put out a long line as well with a free swimming Sawbelly about 100' out and away from the rowboat! Majority of the fish are caught during the first hour of daylight but many were also caught at mid day and of course the evening hours. Most important is fishing the correct temperature for the Browns and setting your baits accordingly. The free swimming bait stays mostly on or near the surface for the Browns that come up to the surface to briefly feed! Very exciting to see a big crash at the surface behind the boat and suddenly the line on your long rod starts peeling out!!
Good luck on The Ashokan!

Mike

Hey guys,

I posted these questions on its own thread and was encouraged to repost here....

New member here and first time poster. I have seen some posts on here (1 in particular) in regards to brown trout in several of the NYC water supply reservoirs. I grew up hunting at a camp in Margaretville and spending afternoons during turkey season chasing smallies on the Pepacton. The last two years I lived in PA while attending grad school and was bit hard by the brown trout bug. However all of my trout fishing in PA was in limestone mountain streams. I just took a job in Delhi and have a lot of interest in trying to figure out how to get into the browns on the Pepacton or Cannonsville.

So I have some questions I was hoping some guys on here might be able to answer for me (without prying too much).

Question 1. I was told that the best fishing from shore is at ice out (which happens to be right now). According to the fishing syllabus "Trout season" is from April 1 to sometime in October I believe. This information is also accompanied with legal lengths and limits for keeping trout. Does this mean that trout can only be kept April 1 through October whatever? Meaning that catch and release fishing is permitted year round?

Question 2. Are the browns generally in localized pockets, or can they be found all throughout the reservoirs? I have been fishing the Pepacton (near where rt 30 crosses) for 15 plus years now and do very well with the smallies (occasional large mouth, perch, pickerel) but have never caught a single brown. Now I know I haven't been fishing over deep water targeting browns etc, however I have spent a lot of time chasing pre spawn smallies with jerk baits (my go to for stream browns in PA). I would think that if there were browns there I would have accidentally caught one in all those years? Which leads to my next/final question...

Question 3. What are the most common and successful techniques (both from shore and boat)? I'm not trying to get any secrets out of anyone, but just looking for general techniques, colors, speed, depths. Any info you guys are willing to give up would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance for any info!

Ben

Any of you guys know what strain of browns your DEC plants in the reservoirs? I know they discontinued the See Forellens years ago due to disease issues. New York was the first state to bring that strain in.

Great fish Brother...
I got boats on Cannonsville and Downsville.
I got an extra one in the back yard.
I was thinking on putting it on the Roundout or Neversink.

Im from Pa.
I try every April 1 to be at Cannonsville Throwing Spoons.
Its nice this year.April 1 is on a Saturday.
Seem to get a lotta smaller Browns throwing spoons.
We allways get into the Smallies also.
April 1 will be here in a few days.
Im with you.I CANT WAIT.

Thanks Chez, appreciate the kind words!

Of the two reservoirs you're considering, I would choose Roundout but I'm partial to the lakers! Love jigging for them and RO is loaded!! I have a boat on Pepacton (Downsville) which as you know, is a brown factory!! It's a blast trolling for them there! This year I'll be putting a boat on Neversink. It too has a good reputation for big Browns and I understand it also has LLS! Good luck and wishing you a successful season on the Ressies! Only 11 more days!  ;D

You bet Chez!

It was 12lbs, got it late April last year flatlining a live Sawbelly, about 100' out with no weight. I always run two suspended saws on down lines off each side of the boat and the flat line for the trout that feed on the surface, especially in the morning!!  VERY productive on Pepacton too!

Thank you brother.
Thats a great trout.
I like 2 rods down with sawbellies on baitrunner reels.
1, 24' and 1 ,27' down.
Then a flat line off the back also sumtimes with a slipbobber set at 7'...

Once on Cannonsville i was flatlinning like you.
No weight or bobber a d a Seagull come down and took the bellie.lol.
He flew off with it and eventually spit it out.
Did you ever get into any of the big carp by accident???
I hooked one on Downsville and it took me a half mile out of the hollow.I thought i had a world record brown.Man they can put up a fight.
Funny stuff buddy.
Tks for thd info.
Im gunna keep an eye out for you on this board.
Good Luck.

LMAO! One of the guys on our local forum for the DEP waters hooked a seagul that picked up a saw and he reeled it in!! He actually removed the hook but not before having been pecked at and bit until he was bloody! Haha! I would've just cut the line!! I have also hooked Carp on Gleneida here in Putnam Co and been taken for a boat ride! They're fun to catch!

Ya Buddy....
Them carp are a riot man.
They pull you all over the dam.
Im dying to hook into one on my yak.

The gull that took my sawbellie never hooked itself.
Spit it out before it did any damage to itself.

Would be great to meet on Downsville.
My boat is at Millers Hallow.

I got 3 on cannonsville.1 up front 1 at the bridge and 1 right inbetween both. (https://www.myfishfinder.com/fishing_forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi1044.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fb446%2Fpabstdaddy%2F20161022_102038_zps3o0gvuue.jpg&hash=2448037cd7623afea5d0cb54abd49940) (http://s1044.photobucket.com/user/pabstdaddy/media/20161022_102038_zps3o0gvuue.jpg.html)
Check out this pic of Cannonsville last fall.it was down to 45% here.
This is right before the bridge.my boat is right behind thst big rock.
When the water is up to normal we crush the smallies around that rock.

Just curious. Are you guys allowed to use an electric motor or do you have to stick to oars?

And don't worry I'm not going to fish there. Just curious.

Row only...   ;D
Title: Re: NYC DEP Reservoirs

Actually, if I'm not mistaken, I believe Cannonsville is the one DEP reservoir that permits the use of electric troll motors but it's a tedious process. All others, as Dom stated, are row only! I hope it stays that way too!

Title: Re: NYC DEP Reservoirs
Post by: taxid on Mar 23, 2017, 03:41 PM
Thanks for reply guys.

I remember guys that rowed with lead core line on a small lake in Mass when I was a kid, and they did quite well with the trout. Better than rest of us that were fishing on the bottom. I was a kid so I had no access to a boat.
Title: Re: NYC DEP Reservoirs
Post by: jager61 on Mar 23, 2017, 05:39 PM
Out of necessity I learned how to troll LC via rowboat and it's quite effective! Especially with Sutton or similar flutter spoons, with a rowboat you can easily control rise and fall of the spoon, make 90 deg sharp turns, instantly speed up or put on the brakes, movements that are not so easily accomplished with a motor boat. And it's these movements that often make trout aggressively strike your spoon!! Trolling cranks is also effective but it requires constant rowing which for physical reasons is difficult for me. In my personal experience, I do much better with spoons and I've applied these techniques up in the Adks on lakes using  a rowboat up there too!

You are 100% correct jagar61.
Trolling motors are allowed on Cannonsville.
Must be powerwashed and numbered.same as the boats.
Also must be left with the boat.no taken home daily.
Bad thing is 2 of my Boats at Cannonsville are downhill BIGTIME.
ITS hard enough getting the gear to and from them ,never mind a Marine Battery.
I do have a boat very close to the Bridge at Cannonsville.
Lugging the batery to that one wouldnt be too bad.

What i am going to try this year is to Anchor.
Ive been watching a lot of guys doing that as of late with great success.
Any of you guys Anchor on these Dams?

Hello everyone,

New to this site and I am a Kayak angler on mostly the Pepacton. You fellas are correct about the trolling motors on Cannonsville. It would be nice if they would expand this program a bit. It was started as a pilot program on the Cannonsville a number of years ago and the DEP has dragged their feet, as they do in many things regarding boating, even though the program has been a success on the Cannonsville. As a Kayak Angler, I have been prompting them, the DEP, to acknowledge the difference between Kayak Anglers and Recreational boaters. Most notably in the fact that the Rec. Boating program doesn't allow Kayaks on the water until Memorial Day weekend. I have been requesting they change that date for Kayak anglers to May 1st.

Chez, I have caught many large browns and lakers on anchor in New Jersey. I fish my bait at different depths. When the wind kicks up there is nothing else you can do. Put your rods in rod holders around the boat and wait. Lou

We fished multiple locations on the Ashokan Saturday and came up empty but it was great to get out.  Water is fairly low for April and no water flowing over the weir but it was nice and clear.  Hardly anybody out for opening day being a Saturday and only saw one boat out.  DEP staff was driving around handing out some goodies like a tape measure and foam key chain holder in the shape of a fish.  Gonna give it another week to warm up a bit and try again.

Very nice fish! Are you guys able to fish for them in the fall when they take on their spawning colors? Nothing like a male brown in spawning colors and big ol' kype!

In the fall you'd probably see them cruising the breaks and hanging out around any inflows.

Taxid, I'm not 100% certain but I believe the reservoirs permit fishing all year for some species. It's a good question. I don't because archery season is on! 😃

Thanks for the kind words Uglystick! NYRT is a friendly page for everyone to drop their pics. Only rule is no blowing up anyone's fav spot or reservoir! It started as a goof but it has taken off nicely! Despite the challenges that row boats present, the DEP reservoirs contain some really nice trout! 😃

Beautiful fish!

Sure wish we could get some coldwater forage back in one of our lakes to produce browns like that. Our DNR planted lake trout and they wiped out the smelt and cisco. They refuse to give us the O.K. to replant smelt as they are an "exotic species." Aren't brown and rainbow trout technically exotic?

Post by: jager61 on May 25, 2017, 07:04 AM
After looking through a bunch of pics the only significant variation I noticed in spot patterns on the Browns were the ones that had minimal spotting overall but the spots were larger in general. Also, all of them were females! Ive been keeping a record of all the Browns I've caught since April 2012 and out of 311 fish, only 4 of them had the LLS appearance! And all from Pepacton. Perhaps a strain variation?

Some variations between sexes in fish species. Not unusual. All my fish that were packed with eggs looked like the females in your pictures. Allegedly according to a text I have the anal fin is different between a male and female brown trout and can be easily seen when they are only a few inches long. Trouble is I keep forgetting to look and verify this.

The strain I reared was the Plymouth Rock strain. Any idea what strain or strains NY plants in the reservoirs? I know NY was the first to bring in the seeforellen strain that is endemic to some large lakes in Bavaria, Germany not to be confused with the meerforrelen. However last I heard NY no longer has the strain due to disease issues.

The thing to remember is the see in seeforellen actually refers to lakes while the meer in meerforrlen refers to sea run brown trout. Can be confusing.

As you all probably know brown trout are closely related to atlantic and landlocked varieties, hence their similar appearance. All native trout and char in  North America are not. Actually rainbows and other trout native to western North America are now considering salmon by taxonomists, and have had their genus name changed from Salmo to Oncorhynchus. And of course lake trout, brook trout, bull trout, dolly varden etc. are actually chars.

I'm sure you all knew this but just in case someone doesn't...

Aren't the teeth the only way to tell for sure? Browns have an extra row of vomerine teeth which salmon do not. Although your rule with the mouth/eye location is right most of the time there are exceptions which require verification via the teeth. At least that's what I believe to be true.

From my understanding landlocks are a subspecies of Atlantic Salmon knows as (Salmo solar sebago). I believe part of Canada has another subspecies knows Ouananiche (Salmo solar ouananiche).

Maybe someone more knowledgeable can chime in. I have experience with brown trout but don't have much experience with landlocked salmon, although we do have some in the Great Lakes.

Did you know Lake Ontario once had a substantial native population of landlocks?

I almost got some landlocks to rear in my trout pond from a local university, but my DNR said no. My DNR seems to be worried about introducing ISA (Infectious Salmon Anemia) although the source was certified disease free, and the fish would have come from an indoor tank. Would have been cool to grow them to 8 to 10 lbs. and get them on hook an line! If they are anything like the skamania steelhead here a good percentage you never get in. Like a stick of dynamite on the end of your line!

My trout pond overflow eventually ends up in Lake Michigan.

Any of you reservoir guys fish them in the fall for browns? I know pre spawn (mid-late Oct.) in the central pa streams I used to fish was the best time of year for me... but I've also learned that these lake browns are a totally different animal.

Yeah those fall browns are really cool when they are at maximum spawning colors with the big hook jaws! I have noticed at some point they can get just as hard to catch as kings in full spawning mode. Have you noticed that?

The bite definitely slows down during the spawn, and I try to leave them alone when they are sitting on their reds. However, you can still catch them during the spawn typically by inciting aggression strikes. A lot of guys will sight fish them off their reds.

Post spawn they seemed to go back to their normal feeding behaviors. Winter was actually my favorite time to fish them (I think mainly because I would have the whole stream to myself!). A lot of guys think the browns are harder to catch in the winter and that you have to hit them in the nose with a nymph to get them to bite. I would have a lot of success fishing big streamers, and bass sized stick baits fished aggressively during the coldest months of the winter.

Thanks Taxid! I couldn’t feel my fingers or feet, but I couldn’t pass up the opportunity to get out there! Patiently waiting for early April when I can get my hands on my boat up in Oswego to go for the Browns! 😊

I do/renew  it on line and fish the shoreline with a flyrod  when the trout streams are high and muddy.catch, trout and bass; it's the walk down the slopes that's a bit troublesome. Good luck

Too windy to take the boat out and no fish shore casting at Rondout. Talked to one group that caught a nice brown in the morning but everyone else I talked to didn't catch anything. Ice-free.

I bet he made that drag scream! I'm surprised his kype is so small in relation to his size.

it's spring not spawning time for this  fella  kypes  get smaller or  disappear   after spawning it  will return next year as  he  ages  he may  even keep it all year

nice  fish ^5

Must be some exceptions as my older browns in my pond seem to keep their kypes year around once they reach a certain age.

I bet those smallies really put up a fight on a flyrod! Are there any bluegills? I noticed a lot of lakes out east don't list them as a species but I've caught them.

I  said  ........ "as  he  ages  he may  even keep it all year"  most  kypes  however are  no where  as  pronounced  as  when the  fish are  in the  spawn ....  conclusion remains the  same  ,that's a  nice fish jager you at wrights  or the one of the others

Sorry missed that. Yes very nice browns and you have a quality fishery there for big browns. We can't even say that anymore for many but not all parts of the Great Lakes.   I am however hearing their forage base is slowly coming back which was nearly wiped out which was the problem.
