Here's a "Campfire Dessert" recipe that is extremely easy, pretty tasty, and that kids will love to make and eat when you're on a family camping trip.

 "Campfire Candy Apples":

Use a soft white fleshed apple such as MacIntosh, Cortland, Rome, Jonathan, etc. rather than a hard apple such as Delicious or Granny Smith. From the top of an unpeeled apple, cut out the the majority of the core by creating a slightly more than one inch diameter hole, while leaving about 1/2 inch of apple meat on the bottom. Stack this cavity full with those round disc shaped cinnamon candies from the bulk food dept. (If you can't get them, those tiny ones called "Red Hot's" will do, but they add a little "heat" to the recipe.) Wrap in foil, and slow bake them around the edge of the campfire, not in the coals. When one side is tender when stuck with a toothpick, turn and do the other side. The candies will melt and disappear into and reddening the apple flesh, sweeten it, and flavor it like a candy apple. Eat with a spoon. Kids will love it, but it's a pretty tasty comfort food for us adults after a few days in the woods eating "camping food". Great alternative to "S'mores" when the kids have a backyard bonfire, too.

Here's one with a different fruit, using an orange - cut off the top 1/8th. of the orange to use as a lid later, then scape out the insides carefully with a spoon, fill about 1/2 full of choc. cake mix, place lid on and wrap in tinfoil, throw into fire or on grill bake 20 min. great dessert also w. a orange twist, if you like white cake mix, that would be great too.
