Post by: Knot there yet on May 11, 2018, 12:31 PM
I don’t want your spot but how about zip code. Post the zip code you catch first striper of the year at.
 01904 virgin still 2018
My buddy got one last week same zip.( no lice may have been hold over)
 Share your Shad too.

Getting the canal gear ready for memorial day.  Usually hit or miss that weekend for bigger bass.

.. Ha.. good luck Jon...you and every other jabroney looking to repeat last seasons carnage...last time I fished the canal was 1976.... I'll settle for less fish and peace of mind...

in '76 I followed the striper migration south.. starting at Popham beach in Maine and finished in Ocean city Maryland...broke ... tired and happy... my '67 VW bug have up the ghost on the way home on the N.J. turnpike... we traded our remaining gear for a ride to the Mass. boarder.. then hitch hiked the rest of the way home... if you tried that today you'd get arrested for vagrancy...

Thanks Joe.  You'd be surprised to learn its awefully quiet out there at night im the spring.  330am hits and thats usually when I am packing up and the pencil popper crew is headed in.  Last year my biggest bass that weekend was a notch under 40lbs!

I too have done popham to montauk.  I dont recall if you were up there that year Jim from 247 had his brother up.  I used to follow those bass north then south.  Then....I started to catch bass in the 45-50" range at the canal.  Deep at night with hardly anyone there.  Ive been doing that for years now.  I always skip the big daytime feeds, many times by default because I'm asleep from the night before.

Thought I saw birds working two nights in a row well make it three. Huge blitz of schoolies as far as eye could see a fish every cast. So happy. Feeding on silversides. (Juvenile herring) giant clouds of them.
An amazing amount Bait all pushed in harbor now. Mackerels everywhere in Boston north channel.
Time to tune up surf gear for keepers

Side note -  Caught a 32" bass this morning on a live pogey, full of sea lice.

Nice...most of these fish were that size.. some I found latter were a tad bit larger.. 15lbs or so... as soon as the tide turned Monday night they stacked up behind a bridge abutment and whacked herring as they dropped back with the tide...they were mid water column in 20' of water..if you hit the cement and let the jig drop..most of the time it got  inhaled on the way down..latter they dropped back and were smacking  sand eels along the mud flats... chowing anything that moved..only problem this time of year is they are moving.. what works one tide may not work the next...every day if different..

You would be surprised. Yes full size pogey. I have caught 26" bass on full size live pogey. I live in Pogey central and have them the entire "season" here for the pickings. Some days full live pogeys are the ticket, some days only chunks. Some days just the heads and some days a full dead Pogey or nothing but a lure. Usually if I cycle through my options I catch a few bass when they are around.

Tons of Bait brought tons of fish. Set the shallow water alarm off on FF. Clouds of fish lots of fun on fly rod. Got in before rain came. Great night of Fishing every cast for a while. They’re coming home

Yup.  There used to be a ton of them in the canal when I started fishing there. Now it seems the main bait is macks.

I've seen a big increase in the number of blue backs this season. We had pogies around last season for the first time in a decade... then the pogie boats came in and scooped them all up..

Thats interesting Joe.  I hunted for those bluebacks hard late last season, found some gannets diving but no giant schools.  There are some pogies in the canal but as of this am things remained quiet from what Im told.

.. you need that big bait to hold the slobs... I'm  holding out hope for a good season...I'm bringing my own gas into the marina.. after last season debacle.. I'm not trusting any gas bought on the water...

]those blue backs are a major spring time big fish staple.. they sustain them on their migration north... any other food source is a bonus.. it gives me great hope to see so many...we used to trailer down to pleasant bay ( before the breach)... spend the night catching herring and be out of bait 2 hours  after sun rise... anything less than 500 lbs of bass was a bad morning!

Maybe those pogies were the scouts...PREPARE FOR BATTLE!

I love the enthusiasm Joe.  I can't wait.  A 50 was taken in the canal already and I have confirmed a bass that weighed 48 was nailed this week.  Im fishing 9pm until at least 8am Friday, Saturday, and Sunday night.  Canal bike is ready and I am also considering some spots north of the canal maybe as far up as Crane.  I bet there's some bass by the ipswitch...

.. the enthusiasm isn't what it once was...I've been doing this for 50 years... I hope I live long enough to complete the goal of 20 ( fish over 50 lbs.)... 2 to go... I can do it in a single night if I get the right school of fish  ( in 2014 I took a 54 and a 56 lb fish back to back casts... I took 3 over 50 including a 61 the first week of July in '86 and a 58 form Head of the meadow beach that  September)... ) last year I didn't break 40lb for the first time in 30 years... I'd bet a saw buck I break 40 before July 1 this year...I can feel it!

I've got a gallon of clams left over from last season... I bet they are beyond ripe!... I'll put a bait on the bottom and chum for mackerel...if I get some..I'll fish strip baits... fresh mack. strips will outfish "aged" clams 5:1... fishing fish bait gives me a shot at a halibut... I'm 0 fer 3... had a big one boat side 3 times 2 years ago and ended breaking it off( dropped loop) on it's last attempt to get free when I tried to gaff it.. :(

Nice fish bud.  Don't blame ya for editing the background.  I won't talk online about surfcasting spots unless they are well known like the breeches, montauk or canal.  I have spots in rhody we use canal bikes to get into.  Just how that game goes.  The more work you put in to find your "spots" the better the reward can be.

Speaking of...Mike any interest in dropping a surf bum off at Cutty?  Early June can be insane.  Need a ride to get there though!

Curious how you get the macks on your kayak.  Are you using a sabiki rig to jig them up?

Find B Bouy.  Macks usually out that way in the harbor.  Then take them to deer island rip and, well let them rip!

Think that area is fishable in the kayak?  The rip out in Buzzards Bay got pretty bad during an incoming tide.  Obviously I couldnt resist drifting an eel through it a couple times but the waves hitting the back of the yak tends to want to turn you sideways.

I can't answer that honestly Pat.  I guess it would depend on how big your stones are.  I'd avoid that rip on a minus tide.  I'd avoid it during the day (boat traffic) but from deer island itself it can be fished.  Big bass inhabit that rip at times!

If she’s ripping, use caution or you flipping. See power boat sink with three quick ones over the transom there. Pm me sometime if your coming north shore I prefer the faun bars.

That spot is nice.  Around castle island can be good too.  Even in the "sugar bowl" at times.
